interesting fuel consumption figures..

..from a guy on Speedwake.

remember tho' that these are US galls, ie about 4 litres, as apposed to 4.54 litres for a real gallon.

496HO fuel consumption.
For the owners of 496HO's. Ever wonder how much fuel your motor burns? Now that gas is so expensive, I'm trying to find that "sweet" spot. Using Diacom software this was my findings from today.

RPM GPH
700 1.61
750 2.0
850 2.17
1070 4.26
1525 5.67
2000 8.55
2100 9.22
2200 9.57
2400 10.43
2800 10.55
3000 11.67
3300 14.5
3500 16.49
3800 19.51
3900 19.73
4000 21.17
4100 22.98
4500 29.26
4600 30.1
4700 32.21
4800 33.32
4900 33.64
4950 34

To get it in perspective, the 34 US GPH max stated here, equates to 29.56 Imperial GPH, or roughly £150/Hour at marina prices

Still way better than our race 502 Magnum MPI, which used 44 imperial GPH flat out! what a greedy fkkr!

Looks as though cruising at around 4k gives a consumption of about 17.5 Imperial GPH, or £85/Hour....could be worse I spose

Jon

I have a 2005 Mag 496 HO in a Cobalt 263 with a Bravo 3x drive using a 26" prop set.

The boat is equipped with Mercury's Smartcraft system and records an efficient cruise around 2800 rpm at 8 gallons ( US ) per hour around 33 knts GPS, and flat out 5000 rpm 38gph around 55knts.

Does the Diacom equipment give you water pressure readings?, I thought I had a problem earlier this season as the reading was 1.5psi at idle, the Merc technicians told me it should be 3.3, I had the boat lifted, changed the impellor that looked brand new replaced it and still have the same reading, what's yours?

Fuel !

Reading this post is scary -

The Cowes 100 start boat (Buzzi RIB with twin Merc outboards) was burning £8.00 a minute in petrol!

This was unnecessary to start this thread mr Fuller! We are all going to be looking for stick and rag boats soon!

Does show how bad on fuel boats are, still, atleast we are all doing are bit for the ozone. Hopefully we can help in getting a decent summer by running bigger and thirstier engines!

£1.05 if you go to the right place!

I'm not sure what marine fuel is at the moment, I'm guessing around 75?

It would be nice to know what speeds are being done at those specific rpms, to see what the most efficient cruising rpm and speed would be for a given distance

AT 4950 = 34 GPH !!!

I wonder at which speed your running tho..i mean at 4950 RPM..so if its at 80+ MPH..its actually not bad.

My BBC is using 0.8 GPM...and i think its absolutley good...others i had and seen use a lot more, like 1.2-1.5 GPM with less power.

Oh, John...BTW... a USGallon is 3.78 liters!

That was for Diesel direct from the tanker mate, 80 odd was petrol, seems it's 88 at the moment.

Don't know where someone found 1.14 a litre, but they got ripped off big time!

It's still pretty scary when you see the prices in the UK, couldn't believe it the other day!!

The Yanmar 6BY's we're fitting in the new boat use 52 litres per hour each - Wide open throttle at 4000rpm - 108 litres per hour at 70mph (estimated top speed if we get it) equals 1.54 litres per mile. The engine is a derivative of the current 3 litre BMW engine.

Cookee is it your maths or mine, surely 2 X 52 = 104 !!!
Still good value I would say compared to petrol. At the end of the day its all about shifting weight efficiently. The lighter the boat the less fuel you use. The faster you go the more in-efficient you tend to be- although Adam will argue that!
