Amazing place. We were fortunate enough to use the facility in 1997 for some prop testing.

Mercury was testing its 225 OB against other 225s. There were three or four identical bass boats, (Rangers I think) powered by Merc, Yamaha, Evinrude and another. The boats would do laps around the lake and come in every half hour to download their collected data. There was also a Velocity 22 with a 300X that was also doing laps but came in every hour or so.

If you asked nicely, they would give you a sticker.

In three trips to Florida, we failed to identify Lake X, although, to be fair, its a big place and we were family theme parking and golfing, with only a few days boat hire.

However, I remember an OPC boat show dinner with Billy Seebold and Jackie Wilson, at the Animous restaurant in Whitfield Street and BS stating how far advanced they were at Lake X, compared to Renato Molinari's set up in Como, then Molinari went and won the next years championship -aided, obviously, by Phil Rolla. Happy Days!

Mind you, my first racing year was managed (advised) by Jackie Wilson.
Now that is character building. Hard racer, hard trainer and hard taskmaster - if he thought you hadn't given it all, beware!

Of course, then joining the Paddy Reilly family, was just an extension of the same. Look out for 2010.

I thought I read somewhere on the internet that this place had been closed!!!! Obviously not!

I watched a video where they tested an engine over 24 hours contiuously, the drivers swapped boats to eat and take pee breaks!

The original "Lake X" has gone, closed down a year or so ago.

I spent an afternoon there in 89, and it sure was an interesting place. Unfortunately, they had a no photographs policy, so I was unable to take any.

Still remember it though, and it was petrol head paradise!

From 1973 to 1992 it was based at Oskosh,Wisconsin when the local greenies winged about carbon emissions and petitioned the winnebago county to get mercury to agree a contract to reduce same, merc just moved it to florida,a little bit of history for you all.

I was under the impression that it started operations in the late 50s in Fla. and just closed down a few years ago.

Can't imagine TD in Oshkosh somehow.

Correct, I was staying in Orlando at the time, and Lake X was just a short car ride away.

Oskosh is in fact the home of Mercury Marine, dunno if they have a lake there though!
