The original lines for this boat began as a design project for me. I was ready to move to the Open Class in 1977 and based on the success of Beep Beep the previous two years, I contracted JC Simon to design a new 38 foot race boat for me.

Jean Claude being Jean Claude, didn't finish the design and build the boat for another two years. I raced and sold the boat , Top Banana, through my own company as a banana boat.

After my winning the first race by a big margin, Jean Claude immediately began selling the boat as a Coyote. (If you remember how the Coyote cartoon character was always trying to catch the Beep Beep character, you will get some insight into JC's relationship with Joel Halpern.....anyway.)

After a few years, the molds were then sold to Sonic....they added a swim platform and it became the 42 Sonic that is still available today.

So this photo is of that design raced as a coyote under the Dry Martini colors.

You would love my Ex Mrs.
She threw away pretty much every race report that was in MBY, Powerboat, and a few other Brit mags from about 1965 thru to 1994.

Eddie Trotta is now a famous motorcycle builder that is featured on TV all the time. He builds Choppers. He still lives in Ft Lauderdale on the intercoastal, and has a 35 Cigarette for a pleasure boat.

Yes, John runs the APBA / Superboat series out of Key West.

We are having a special showing of the old race boats at the November event this year in Key west. See our website for more info.
