Loss Of slipway in Portsmouth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the Portsmouth news yesterday Portsmouth Council has decided to take away the boat trailer park at Camber docks as they say more car parking spaces are needed (MORE REVENUE). They are now saying if you are a slip way user stay away there is no space for trailers, They are taking away the only decent public slip way in portsmouth, A sea fairing city, If you know anyone who uses this slip way please surport me as I intend to start a pertition to save a well used pleasure facility, This slip way is used by both locals and non locals and is a much needed facility throughout the summer.and has been for the past 40 years

Didn't see the Portsmouth news yesterday so this is really bad new news to me as we use it all the time.
Count me in on any way to fight it.
As you say it's the best slip in the area.
Nasher.

Just to give you an update, I have spoken to the news today and sent them an email with the view of how we feel about the loss of the trailer park at the camber docks, The impression I got is that they feel we have a valid point and I am hoping it will be published. I am not sure on how to set up a petition on line so I have set up an email address were you can send your support, Please put any comments in your email to help save the trailer park and I will present them to the council. please send your emails to saveportsmouthslipway@talktalk.net

Will it be of help if we pitch in as The Powerboat Rally Association saying we have over 30 members many of whom use that slip and park? If so very willing to help.

Does anyone know why the slipway could be lost ?
I have had e-mails about an 'exciting' prospect for Portsmouth in that vicinity, which, if correct, will render any petition unlikely to succeed due to income, prestige etc that will come to the area, and no, it is not a new housing complex !

Thank you for the support in this petition, yes the backing of the Powerboat Rally Association would be great, Please send your support and reason to the email address saveportsmouthslipway@talktalk. net We are not losing the slipway but the trailer park the serves it, We need somewhere to park our trailers whilst out on our boats. The car parks are not suitable as the trailers will over hang the parking bays into the road ways. The camber docks is in an area know as old Portsmouth so should it not be kept as such. We are not against tourism or anything that will improve the area and bring in much needed growth, or we are asking for is that a well used slipway along with its facility's remain. It costs £2.50 to launch a boat & £2.50 to recover your boat although quite often the barrier is left open. Portsmouth city Council are looking at ways to improve Southsea sea front, Why not build a slipway up at Eastney opposite the Marine museum were the beach is all over grown with weeds and alike, This would be a great attraction, reduce traffic in the harbour mouth which all boaters know can be treacherous, This we would happily pay to use. Not that it will ever happen just a thought.

I scattergunned different departments at Portsmouth city council with emails about this to get a reaction.
I’ve heard back from 2 different departments so far, one of which was the ‘Parking Office’ explaining that the Camber dock is owned by the port, and that they are unaware of any changes being made.
They’ve supplied me with the telephone number of “the port” to call, which I’ll do later today.
Nasher.

That is bad news, not that I have ever used it but slipways are getting difficult to find now, especially those that are free/reasonably priced as this one is. We don't need to (effectively) loose another.
Could be worse though - I live I Sovereign Harbour Eastbourne with a spit of the water. No slipway. "If you want your (16') Stapely launched sir we can do it on our weekend package of £65.00 which is the cheapest option" was what I was told by the beaming girlie when I asked. Hmmm 65 quid & see your boat hoisted by a huge squillion tonne travel hoist.
Not exactly popping out on a nice summer evening for a hours blast is it? Oh & they don't work evening & after 4 at weekends.

Yes, I've that's what all this is about.
To be clear, the slipway will remain, for the time being, it's just going to be a bit useless to the likes of us who need somewhere to park our trailers as the car parking spaces are too short.
Nasher.
