Marathon Racing for us

For BananaShark this year it is all a bit up in the air, I would like to do London Monte Carlo as it will be an epic race, Round Britain sounds like a fun "Rally" as well. The reality is that my sponsorship won't give me anywhere near enough funds to get to Monte so I have some decisions to make:

1. I have an enquiry (that's all at the moment) for the boat less engine and drives, if that happens the boat will not be doing anything racing for the foreseeable future.

2. It would be nice to fill the boat with generous sponsors for the race and the problem I have with selling seats is the reliability of the race - I have personally lost money in the abandoned Cowes Monte effort and whilst I have a lot of faith in Aidan's ability to make it one hell of a race it still depends on lots of entries - On this basis I would be prepared to sell seats (assuming there is any interest) to anyone wanting to give it a go - Nothing up front but a firm money in the bank commitment until we absolutely know it's going to run and we need to spend money.

3. Sell the boat complete for someone wanting to do the race themselves and offering myself as crew on any boat that will have me - I have a licence which is hard to obtain!

4. Any other ideas/Offers?

I reckon with two motor homes and a tow vehicle with two drivers (all volunteers) fuel costs for the boat and vehicles, ferry, toll and other costs to get the boat to Monte and back assuming everything goes to plan would be at least £50,000 upwards - unless someone knows better?

seriously though - I really hope the RYA / Organisers really get things together.

As much as I doubt whether the costs of the L-MC would ever fit in with my race budgets - it could really boost the Marathon scene. Or if not L-MC then another headline event.

But at the moment there needs to be a lot more momentum / confidence for me to commit to racing a Marathon class in the near future.

Not saying there is not a lot of hard work going on - but it is a bit all behind the scenes!

Good news to see all is still going ahead and long live the Cowes event.

My point would be that it is a lot to do for one event - and certainly not justifiable in building a new boat for one race a year. Would really like to see the Marathon boats have a good series / club. Probably only 4 or so races - but good events / venues etc.
