Mariner Late 1980's outboard.

I Have just bought a Mariner 6hp 2 stroke. I estimate its late 80's early 90's. (red and orange lined cowling). I notice that lower units and all casings are identical to the 10 and 15 hp 2stroke motors. I also notice that the engine is quite big for 6hp. A friend recommended its basically a 15hp engine with a smaller carb.

Anybody know if this is true? Any help on how (if possible) to upgrade would be sincerely helpful.

Also if upgradable are the gears strong enough for a 10 or 15hp mod. ?

Cheers,
Rob.

I think you will find that it is the same as the 8hp, the Yamaha & Mariners shared the same motors, the 10hp & 15hp are larger cc than the 6hp & 8hp.
