Anybody know what the legal max width is for towing a boat on a trailer in the UK, I was speaking to a guy who does boat deliveries who said that said there were exceptions width wise for boat towing compared to caravans ect but he couldnt remember the max width.

the maximum width for the trailer is 2300mm you are allowed 305mm overhang each side

Err... no you're not! You are allowed a maximum overhang of 305 BUT the overall width must not exceed 2900. So if your trailer is 2300 then you can overhang one side by 305 but the other by only 295.......:D ..and you sell trailers for a living? My my what is the world coming to?:bang:

Thank you maths was never a strong point. Having looked around a few boat yards alot of the trailers looks as though they come under 'Agricultural Trailer' laws- these allow the trailer to be 2500mm wide

So if my maths are alright its ok to tow my Wellcraft then at 8'10" ?, thats good news,
Thanks

Hi ho! Hi ho! It's off to work we go!

In which universe would a boat trailer possibly qualify as an agricultural implement. There's not that many fish farms around!

As long as yer trailer is 6'10" wide in old money...and all the rest of the sizes/weights are within limits....:D

Another factor to bear in mind is how long is your trailer & what is the kerb weight of the towing vehicle?

Trailer length would be to suit a 8 metre boat, towing vehicle is a grand cherokee so thats fine, weight is the worrying factor, its very, very, very close

Honestly,

Unless you are a complete ass on the road, the Police are unlikely to bother you.

I tow the BladeRunner, and it is 9'6" wide and 38' long on the trailer. Weight about 3 ton. I have gone through a Police roadblock with this behind my truck, and they asked me if I had been drinking ( their roadblock was for this purpose ) then let me on my way, without comment.

I have also been 'followed' on several occasions by the Police whilst towing the same rig with the ML - which I *know* for sure is not legal. They appeared to watch the boat for 5-10 minutes, then buggered off someplace else.

Europe however is totally different.

Towing the V24 I was stopped and measured!

G.Brown and P.Little were also stopped in Scandinavia and told they were over the limits and had to add on warning tapes etc....

Well it has to be done, the dry weight of the boat is 2995 KG, the lightest trailer I can find is the Bramber at 500 KG which puts it spot on 3500 KG, problem is she has factory fitted genny and air con which along with some go go juice puts me well over but as you say if your not driving daft they would hopefully not bother. Thanks for the replies.

When I weighed my boat and trailer, I took it to a weighbridge at a granary where they mostly weigh the grain trucks. The weighbridge operator said that the police generally allow a +5% error and occassionally 10%. There are no guarantees on this though.

I tow my Extreme 26 around with my Grand Cherokee and its not a problem , weight of trailer and boat is approx 2.5 ton (i think)
