I've got one, its called a tape measure.

You look from the top down and get a second person to look from the side that way between you you will be able to ensure you're perpendicular to the transom in both axes.

How does Gav do it? Can't you use his tried and tested method?

Also don't forget when drilling the transom to close one eye and stick your tounge out the side of your mouth!!!

I thought of the following. Find a Jackplate Which has some studs. Now sit some spacers on the studs place a flat plate on said studs and tack with mig or epoxy. You now have a perfect template of the bolt pattern. with 3" long guides to keep you square
dont use early L & S as they are not standard bolt pattern

Must have my thinking head on today if you dont have a jackplate to use then set some 3" spacers in the saddle mount holes and then tack the plate to them.
patent pending
obviously the first time you use it you drill through the plate

Transom plate

Does your Transom plate not have the required bolt pattern cut through it?

just glue some spacers on the plate then. bit of copper tube would do (but cut em square). knock them off when done

Chaos had the best idea of using a piller drill to drill a hole out of a small piece of wood and use that. I have been searching the web for a 90 degree drill jig or something similar? There has to be something out there for the job.

you can get one from Merc dont have the part number.
costs a lot though looks a bit like the stendrive one that TD posted on a thread a while back but for Outboards

Wood idea only works if the transom is flat.................

Just do it by eye, what are you worried about.
Its not like you have to be within 0.5mm squareness.

Just get someone to eye the drill through the side plane against the transon whilst you eye it through the straight plane.

I have always done it that way.

Not cross eye'd are you ;-)

Rob, i think you are trying to make this alot harder than it really is. just use your transom plate as a template and do as Cye says and eye it through
should have it done in less than 20minutes

Trouble is Mr Rob's eyes point in different directions. (In my line of work, I rarely need more than this! ). Should he eyeball it with the left eye, or the right eye?
