The crankshaft in a 2,4 with oil injection ,or a crank from a 2,5 with oil inj is the same crank,you can swap them if you want,only the bearings have a bigger diameter in the 2,5 block.

Most problems were piston detonation,or a oil pump failure.
Then the problem start into the cilinder,and eventually broke a rod and as a resut the crank was damaged.
In some cases a rod bolt would break,with a lot block damage as a result.

Did you or your dealer found the actual problem ?

Directly mercury made a 200xri 2,5 with a 7 pedal intake .to 92 then they swich from 7 pedal to 5 pedal intake.
electronics were the same (exept for ecm value,s )
2,4 stock carb or efi,s have a single exhaust port ,high perf 2,4 have a bridgeport exh.
The same efi laser intake system was used by mercury all these years to +- 2004 now they all have the pcm system.
