N Z 1 4litre cat

What happened to the original hull that came over to Guernsey ?
Who designed and built it cos after that won beating the argentinians in Frigidair the Puma cats all looked very similar.

Nz1

NZ 1 became Blighline (M.Mannings) and went on to race between 1988 and 1990.Circa 25 races scoring a couple of firsts but was usually beaten by Fina.

Simon you are quite correct there was a trend after the worlds in IID to go back to sitting in sponsons & many look-a-like designs.
I prefered Frigidair good rig & came so close - that was one close event

Fina`s

Blighline was usually beaten by either the Wright or Midas Fina boat. The merits of having the motors in the centre v sponsons usually ended up with the boat starting out with them in the centre and then changing to the sponsons (i.e. Gus It,Robin Hood) although the two Stapley cats (Scanelite,Nova Arts) were very successful. On the OP1 Toleman Cat (centre drives) they say it was not that clever.Probably the truth was it was more down to set up and reliability against the competition ,that gave boats like Scanelite their success.

I was under the impression that behind the sponson was kinder to the motor, less likely to have the gearbox and/or motor ripped off!

NZ1 was the inspiration for the Puma 25.

The last I heard of it, Clive Baker had it up for sale in Chertsey 3 or 4 years ago, was rotten though. Not sure after that.

Came to the IOW and sat in a garage yard rotting away - then got rescued and taken up-country.

Proanbly the quickest 4L twin engine cats with centrally mounted engines would have been the Hydrolift cats?

Well , I don't quite know what it is but these two boats N.Z 1 and Frigidaire had real character.
Somehow Adam the Hydrolift doesnt quite do it for me
Which design was Frigidaire or was she built in Argentina, and where is she now ?

I still have bits of Frigidaire's sponson, in that Guernsey race the NZ cat and the Argies had a "small" coming together.

Bearing in mind the race was only 4 years after the Falkland episode, the NZ boys were playing it up for everything it was worth!

As discussed we saw copies of the NZ boat, which ran quicker than Blighline, then Neil Holmes took the evolution further with Fina (built by Wright) and even further with Fina / 2 (built by Midas).

Tony Davies is spot on -"I was under the impression that behind the sponson was kinder to the motor, less likely to have the gearbox and/or motor ripped off!"

The Fish -"although the two Stapley cats (Scanelite,Nova Arts) were very successful" has missed the point.

Those cats were racing against far slower mono hulls and the drivers did not have to stress their machinery.

Frigidaire

Frigidaire was a Barbot-Sarthou boat.As you say Adam ,the Hydrolift boats had centre motors, presumably they thought directly behind the cockpit was the way to go,and would outweigh the merits of having a sponson mounted arrgt. It`s all a compromise.Would be interesting to have Paul Sinclair`s comments as his boat Gus It, had both arrangements.(centre then sponson arrgt)

The only time the ex "Gus It" ran well, was with sponson mounted motors with water pick up units - which were illegal in them days.

Stapley Cats

That`s what I meant about the competition Mr.Ciao.They may have been successful but always look for the competiton. You very rarely find a like for like situation in any year to make a true comparision.

Wish he did when I was racing with him. "disappearing quite often over the horizon".

I have to say that Roy and I are mates these days, but he was the worst guy I ever raced with.

We got chucked out of restaurants because Roy needed to know the sexual orientation of the waiter, and it went on.

Having said that great fun at the time, and I can only admire what he has achieved in 3C.
