How do the 19 compare to the 20 and 21. Is it just the length and width or are ther other differences to the runnig side, pads etc. Does the 19 handles as vell as a 20 or 21?

As far as I've always been aware the XL although quite different, was basically derived from the 18 Phantom which had been (and still remains) very successful in Offshore Circuit Racing, a class at which Nick Barsch excelled.

I'm not exactly sure, but I think the motivation for the development of the XL was Nick and Steve Bakers belief that the 18 was becoming an elderly design and that Steve could produce a ‘better’ boat suited to the courses and more capable with an XR2 for the 2.0L class. Around the time of its conception, I believe OCR was in discussion of some rule changes one of which would have meant a min length for all 2.0L boats & the 18 wouldn’t have measured, so the decision for an increase in length was taken. I think Nick was quite involved with the boats progress from Steve’s initial design to the finished boat. The end result being that Phantom managed to offer a ‘bigger’ boat that is actually faster with the same HP than an equivalent 18.

I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Nick but have spoken to him on various occasions & have always been given the impression that the reason for the XL’s failure to really stamp its mark on the racing scene (other than the limited years Steve Baker actually produced it) was that, when the big change came; it was the motors (dropping from approx 200hp to 130ish HP) and not the boat size that changed. This possibly handing the advantage back to those with smaller boats? That said; recently at the ‘Brass Monkey’, one of the original peppermint green XL’s now running a Yam 130 had a very credible average speed of 55.5 mph and beat a couple of Ribs running 2.5L 200XS’s.

When Phantom ceased trading a few years back, the moulds were passed to Nick Barsch who has them moulded by one of the‘Cookie International Industries’ umbrella of companies. One of the boats he rigged last year was apparently super-light and had a 280efi on it, His verdict (and I quote) a ‘maniacs boat’. I also know that Nick has a couple of 2006 stock boats ready for rigging.

From my recollection, (forgive an old man if this is incorrect owing to memory fade) the first 19 was the one that Nick campaigned in his last years of racing. He set it up tandem and it was very quick in calm water but had a tendency to "bite back" in the rough, putting Nick`s navigator in hospital with a punctured lung and broken ribs after a bad stuffing at Southend. The boat was sold to Martin Fisher who campaigned it in 1999 I think, but again it caught Martin out a couple of times. Iain Sanderson then hired it for the 2000 OCR season and the boat was written off in the OCR race at Cowes, all filmed by Sky TV.
I would not want anybody thinking that this is the norm for the 19 because it isn`t. Graham Hastings, Richard White, Brian Peedell, Steve Masterman, Christian Auger and others managed to get their boats to perform well in all conditions. Stuart Williams and the Gibralta boys are both currently excelling in OCR in theirs.

All put very well Chaos ........... except the spelling!

Actually there is no "group of companies" Just BananaShark Ltd. We manufacture the Formula 1 (200hp) Race RIB, the 770 5 seat leisure version of the same hull, and have recently purchased some more moulds for 3 hard boats and 2 RIBs which we are currently modifying to our usual high standard!

The Gibralter boys boat is one of ours, and together with Nick we have looked after the boat for them whilst they travel to and fro to Gibralter.

The 21 is a bigger boat, and such will obviously cope with bigger seas, but needs more horsepower and is nowhere near as nimble as a boat 2 foot shorter, but they are both excellant hulls - the question has to be what sort of use would you put the boat to, and what sort of conditions would you expect to use it in?

I seem to recall Alan (who worked for Steve) telling me they were 20' & 2cm. He even admitted it was a strange amalgamation of measuring units!

Did they make a 16ft version of this style? There's a very neglected lookin powerboat sat in the boatyard and the owner reckoned it was an old phantom. The deck looks similar in terms of the screen shape etc execpt the boat can't be any bigger than 16ft, definitely not 19....

I'll be honest and say I've never measured one, but they are over 19' LOA, so the 20' + 2cm is probably right!

Maxim - They did make a Phantom 16 - they are fantastic boats and unbelievable in the rough for thier size!
