Does enybody her have experence with that new Phantoms
I remember Jason Hunt ran a phantom 21 (Sigma Computers?) in Guernsey with 2 x 2.4 Carb Mercs that were good for about 250 HP each (I know because I borrowed them to stick on the back of my cat during the 1986 Guernsey Gold Cup)

So the 1980s vintage Steve Baker P21 was certainly good for 500 HP !! Not sure what happened to the boat later possibly re-rigged as a single.

That P21 now belongs to Paul Mahy who runs the local powerboating with me. Has a leisure spec deck on now. After Jason had it it was rigged for a single, then put back to two xr2's when Paul had it. No doubt it's very well built, it's next on my to-do list when the revenger's done! She'll be brought back to immaculate spec and hopefully raced again!

perhaps people should speak to russ williams on here , he was part of the deal when purchasing the ORIGINAL tooling from cobra. 2yrs later and hes still being shafted and not getting any access to something he paid for. russ has even asked if i would take over this debt and recover the moulds for him. as everyone here is p21 mad perhaps if we all backed him and helped him out the whole issue could be resolved, the other party involved Martin from hydromax needs to keep to his word and just hand them over to russell.
the saddest outcome of this whole fiasco is that the moulds could end up being lost then everyones a loser.
from what i gather from one of my employees who actually laid up the last boat out of the moulds in question, theyre knackered and need some serious rework.russ actually has a hull and deck moulding, but instead of tidying them up and making new moulds from these hes persisted in trying to get access to something that he rightfully owns, so he doesnt get labelled as another splasher, but if he was to splash what he has and has the rights to build is this a splash or justifiable new tooling.
i suggest we get behind russ let him splash his mouldings and make some new moulds. probably turn out better made than anything martin the bodger could make anyway

Thanks for the update James- good luck with the project and nice to see another 25 year old boat with a (racing) future ahead of her.

This underlines the point that the original boats constructed by the designer are generally better than subsequent copies - no matter what advances in technology may have taken place in the mean time.

(this obviously depends a great deal on the professionalism of the new builders and I am sure high quality constructors can and do make a good job)

Regards taking a clandestine mould from someone elses design ("splashing ") I cannot see the point in taking an existing design and make an exact copy (even if it was a successful boat) without trying to look at ways to improve it and to try to understand what bits worked and what didn´t.

For example I recently had a chance to buy a set of moulds for frigidaire 22 catamaran here in Buenos Aires currently on mercadolibre (local version of e-bay) http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/...z-completa-_JM this is a copy of the well proven Skater 21- and the price less than £2000

Theres no way that I would like to build a straight copy- official or unofficial What I prefer is to take my camera and tape measure and add to my data library of tunnel heights and widths , deadrises, step positions, engine heights etc etc and look at the characteristics of the boat in question.

I really suppose it depends if you are interested in design or just making a profit from somebody elses.

Cheers Guy

I thought the one in Paul Ms yard was originally Phantom Fanny as raced by Andy C it then became Friends Revenge raced by G Priaulx and Jon T the leisure deck was added by Mark Eddie in his mums kitchen as it was tandem before.I don't remeber Jason racing it with twins.I do Fly Boy the blagg and SBM18 which later split
The sister ship to Phantom Fanny was Phantom Whistler owned by the late Paul H sadly cut in half along the keel to convert into a catamaran !

Well there ya go eh! I can't remember who told me the above but that was what I'd always believed to be the case!
As far as I know Paul's was built for twins from the outset, would that be the case?

While chatting to Paul Arnold the other night, he mentioned his wife (Helen?) used to race in a boat called Phantom Fanny, would that be the same boat then??

Cheers, James

I might be wrong but thought Phantom Whistler became Friend´s Revenge because Graham Scott bought the OMC 235 from Paul Hammill in 1983, painted it a nice sky blue and put it on the back of the 21´cat we built for him. Friends Revenge then had a 200 fitted and stuffed it big time at the start of a Havelet race first time out.

I sold the V6 175 from my Cougar cat to Andy Chambers to put on Phantom Fanny (after he dunked his 225) we rigged it and I raced it with him for a few races also in 1983. I thought this boat later became Allied Heating?

I remember Jason swopped his 2 x 2.4s with me for one race only with a new Mariner 200 and he raced the P21 in Class 3D in powerboat week´86.

I remember the Blagg a very interesting design but kept throwing the crew out when going round corners.

Jason´s phantom 21 fitted with the twin 2.4s I believe held the unofficial record SPP to Herm in something like 1m 54 seconds a sedate 80 plus average

But it was all a few years ago now!

The thot plickens. I'll have to call Paul and find out for sure! I'm just about to call back someone else who knew Jason well too actually so he may know more!

Phantom Fanny first raced with 225 Mercury Andie C and Paul Moed had that first. Then the UK boys started coming over to race only two litre.Mark Eddie put a big Yam on it and changed the beautiful tandem deck sacrilege really .So as a race deck it was originally built to race. I suppose one should ask Jason or my mate Stevie G where it came from,of course he then went on to race Guernsey Skater the 21 with the xr2 and the then new pointy gearbox.
I can't believe no one is racing that today it's a he'll of a boat although being a cat a fair bit more difficult to drive then a mono.

As good as the Skaters are, I didn't think anybody ever got one to go that well in what was 2 litre.

Well, I can confirm that Paul Mahy's P21 is indeed Jason's Boat. Dutch was right about the deck change and Mark Eddie owning it, but it then went to Paul.
Had a good chat with him this eve about refurbing it so she may yet see the race scene again next year!

John Archer does indeed have gsy skater, I had a look at buying it a good few years ago and it seemed that water had got into the foam in places so I walked away. Never poked that far though so could still be good! I'm told he won't sell it these days...

Larby,
you looked at the skater once, where you get your information from, nobody knows, the boat has no water damage to the foam? get your facts right.
You walked away because you had no money, and i decided to keep it!!!
