an explanation from an old poker run website.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A POKER RUN?

A poker run is not a race. It is a game of chance, but speed does not determine the outcome of the game. Each participating boat navigates a carefully charted course, stopping at five checkpoints along the way, collecting playing cards in sealed envelopes at each stop. At the evening event, the envelopes are collected from the boaters, opened, and the crew with the best poker hand is declared the winner.

Poker runs provide boaters with a chance to take part in an organized boating event with other avid boaters. The events usually take place over the course of a weekend, allowing for lots of fun activities on shore as well as on the water. These events routinely attract some of the hottest, fastest, and most exotic boats from around the country, but also provide more average boaters with a chance to run their performance boats on big water as well.

So, if you are looking for a fun weekend on the water, why not come along to a Poker Run? You never know, you just might walk away with a handsome cash prize!
