This topic was covered a short while ago and there was some very good advise from Ian Toll as I have had the same problem. (see link below)

i have to say that dealing with GJW has been somewhat strange, although still friendly. They said originally that they wouldnt insure it as it didnt fit their profile. i pointed out that this was odd as they insured it with the previous owner. i was then offered insurance that was priced to a point where it is clear they dont want to insure it.
it had a £750 excess and when i say the price meant they didnt want to insure it, i mean they REALLY didnt want to insure it.
it might be under new management or something and this isnt their risk sector for new clients.

I suspect they have had a large claim involving a fast 25 ish foot boat, I did wonder if they had insured the old P1 Cougar race series where a lot of boats capsized and some sunk or the new P1 Panthers where there was a fatality I believe.

I find it strange as they are usually more accident with novices jet ski's, and small high power speed boats. Or may be they are just not insuring sports boats anymore.

My insurance is up for renewal in August so will be interesting what they come back with, however they did make it clear they would not be renewing it.

Think I will be getting a surveyors report done and trying Porthcawl Insurance

well so far porthcawl have been the most forthcoming i have to say. sadly it is indicative perhaps of a trend towards anyone new taking insurance and that generally means an ongoing increase for existing policies.

thanks to everyone that contributed. By a long way the most sensible and easy to deal with were Porthcawl. it was painless. thanks to those that suggested them.
sent a simple mail describing the situation
i got a quote the following day.
i asked for some changes.
got that the following day.

why others seem to treat me like i was in possession of WMD was beyond me.
i got it for £450 with an introductory discount that will go down each year with a NCB. pretty fair for the type of boat.

GJW were £750 and had a number of inclusions and exclusions that would have ended with it being twice the porthcawl price. clearly not fitting their profile for new business i guess.

as bunnies go in general, i am now a happy one

GJW refused renewal

Just received my refusal from GJW to renew my boat insurance stating:-

"Our underwriter have declined to offer renewal terms due to the make and model of the vessel. This boat is outside of our underwriting criteria"

Well at lease they have given me a reason now and not just "we don't insure boats like the picture on Cougars web site" as the explanation received last year.

Well off to Porthcawl Insurance might get a marine survey first.

Porthcawl Insurance

Just changed insurance from GJW to Porthcawl Insurance.

What a super company to deal with, they agreed a value without surveyors report and were considerably cheaper.

And for an extra £10 got full legal cover too, no brainer really.

Many thanks Porthcawl Insurance
