Recommended product for painting inside of the hull

Looking for advice/recommendations for painting the inside of my Ring 21 now that the majority of the rebuild is completed.

I had intended to flow coat it but reading through some of the support literature it looks like it is only recommended for coverage on bare surfaces and unfortunately one of the past owners has painted the side panels in some form of white paint. in addition I have a bit of bare marine ply that needs to be covered as well.

I believe that I can cover the bare wood with a covering of resin just to seal it up but its the possible reaction to the existing paint that worries me.

Has anyone had experience of over painting with flow coat or any other suggestions for a suitable product for deck/bulk head coverage?

Cheers

I use Reactive resins Safegaurd EA, although it is sold as as anti osmosis treatment it's basically a thick two pack epoxy paint. I was told and have no reason to disagree that epoxy sticks 2.5 times better that polyester flow coat. Also if someone has used ordinary paint like Dulux, epoxy will not pickle and blister the existing paint, but polyester flow coat will because of the styrene solvent.

Epoxy Resin, Industrial Flooring, Resin Flooring, Anti Fouling, Strippit Paint Remover and Epoxy Coatings

Just buzz over the surface to be painted (including bare wood) with 120 or 180 grit DA or electric sander. Hoover any dust up and wipe over with acetone to degrease the surface. Be careful with acetone and use in a well ventilated area, it is extremely flammable. Roller first coat on and allow to dry, then again just remove any bugs or nibs and apply a second roller coat. That's how I did my engine bay and inside my lockers and I was really pleased with it.

I have since found out that two pack epoxy garage floor paint (and it must be two pack epoxy) is exactly the same thing at half the price, search on eBay for paint. My engine bay with two coats, took two liter's just as a guide.

A hot power washer should take the paint off. Definitely wont work well gelcoating over paint. If the paint is loose at all whatever you put over it isnt going to work out well.
Danboline is pretty good stuff but not a great choice of colours.
2 pack paint works well too..

Epoxy garage floor paint worked well in my Bernico, just make sure the area you're painting is lightly sanded and very clean

Freddy

Does that epoxy paint fill the weave at all? Is it quite thick like flowcoat?

Hi Glen

Not to sure what you meed by fill the weave, I presume you mean can you see the surface texture of the composite material in the painted surface.

The answer is yes as the paint is not quite as thick as Flowcoat which is basically polyester gel coat with pigment and wax. I have attached a picture of my engine bay to give you an idea.

I have had Flowcoat crack lift and peal in the past if the surface is not prepared properly, but never ant problems with epoxy. Also as my boat is made using vinylester resin nothing sticks to it other than epoxy.
