Lets face it the last couple of years i saw that Revenger race i don't think it hit 50mph.

Again with the blowing out of proportion! I bought it from Russ, and I've said a few times i don't blame him at all. The only reason Pete was mentioned was because people asked who built what, and I replied with what I'd been told and I believed to be true. I've apologised for my mistake.
Could someone do the honour and delete this thread? I'm fed up with arguing. I'd rather just start another from where I am now, I've got some new pictures of tonights progress.
James

Kinnell!! I wonder what the spec at Trio's was for a small block build!
Sorry, couldn't resist.

take no notice of what is or isn't being said just get on with the rebuild and keep the pic's coming I'd rather read what progress you have made than the tickle tackle on who did or did not
the boat will be just what you want at the end of all this you have done to much to give up now mate push on and get it finished soon you'll be on the water

A decent Moderator should be able to split this thread into a new one leaving all the vitriol behind.

Yeah, I'm gonna ask Jon to go through and 'weed' the crap out of this thread. Still gonna start a new one though, hopefully that way it'll stop all this latest banter.

Will do, can you PM me his number so I can give him a call tomorrow? It'd be good to apologise as close to 'in person' as I can, and I can hopefully find out what her history is once and for all!
Cheers, James

Big progress!
Right then! My god have I been itching this week!
I keep her in a vinery where food is grown, so time is running out fast for me to do all this kinda work before the summer!
I've tried to do the grinding in a few long stints. Itches like you wouldn't believe! I've filled 3 100ltr bins with the dust from doing this, made a bit of a mess of the whole area really!
Turns out the hull's construction is... gell (applied by brush), then one layer of CSM, then two layers of woven, then one more csm. I dunno what a normal layup would be, but this doesn't seem right to me!!
Over this is a total mis-match of glass holding down the balsa and stringers.
I started by peeling off as much of the delaminated glass as i could, forgot to take a pic of the pile but there's quite a bit! this left the hull in a right mess, but saved some grinding!
From there, I had about 2 layers left to grind through till the woven of the hull i was aiming for, along with all the edges etc to gring down.
This is, without doubt, the most horrible, shittiest, crappest job I've ever had to do. I wouldn't recommend anyone ever, ever tries it! It took me about an hour and a half to do each foot of the hull. Seemed every time i thought i was through to good stuff, it turned out there was another problem below!
The strakes the stringers sit in are now down to the very outer single skin of csm, right through to the gel in places. The glass here was black and rotten. Figured there was no point in leaving any of that in, though I've now got to be seriously careful where I stand! Most of the rest is down to a layer of csm and 1 woven.
Whoever did the repair to the side really went to town, shame they didn't do the whole boat! There's about 6 layers of woven, and about an inch of csm in there! Sadly though, they didn't prep the hull properly, so the majority just popped off! That was real fun to grind back up in the cabin!
Here come the pics...

Peeling
Ok, so this was the first stage, peeling off whatever was loose! Shows quite well just how much it was all delaminating! Seems to me there was a severe lack of resin used in the construction!
Pic one is where we left off...
Pic 2 and 3 are mid way through the peeling stage.

First night's grinding!
I got the rear port side quarter done. From the transom to about 1 ft from the dash.
pic 1 shows the area looking forward, pic 2 looking aft.
pic 3 is a closeup of the finish at that stage (It'll be smoothed more yet). It looks very lumpy because of the edges of glass layers showing, but it's just an illusion, it's actually very flat and smooth.
Last pic gives an idea of the dust created just from this little bit! I'd already swept up the main part of it from around where i was working. It was about 1" thick in most areas, 8" deep in the middle!

Got the day off...
As we all know, our boats are far more important than trivial little things like running a business, so i took friday off to get more grinding done.
Really lacked inspiration though, so didn't do as much as i hoped. Still, i got the other rear quarter done.

Todays work...
Got up early today and drank loads of relentless to keep me motivated! Boy did it work, i hit her like a ton of bricks!!
Basically all of the bottom is now ground, though i still intend to flatten it off quickly as a finishing touch.
As i mentioned earlier, I've had to take the strakes down to the very last layer of csm as all of the woven was shot. It seemed to come out almost completely dry of resin, so the water had been able to travel through it easily, turning it black and rotten.
These pics just show the general area I've now ground back...

Front repair...
These bits were a right pig to do. The front had delaminated at some point in the past and was repaired. At the same time, the other side had the same amount added, presumably to prevent the same happening. They glassed down the side, over the chine, then over the floor for some reason.
As a result, after removing the floor i was left with an edge about an inch thick to grind back! After starting the grinding i then found most of it was delaminated, so had to cut and grind it further back by up to 1ft. Barrels of laughs! Took me about 3 hours. You can see all the layers where i feathered it back in the closeups!
In one part there was a layer of Gel between the original glass and the repair, dunno why, but most of it seems to have held. There were bits of red slopped about in there too so maybe it was just 'mess' from the repair that they decided to glass over

Strakes
Just to show the detail of the strakes. As you can imagine, trying to grind this accurately through a ton of resin and 3 layers of glass, stopping at the last thin layer of csm, ain't easy! Somehow i managed to never slip all the way through, mainly thanks to 'vision' flap disks that you can see through while you work!
I know there was only 1 layer of csm left cos i had to go through it sometimes, and ended up in the Gel!
The hull realy was on it's last legs. Aside from all the delamination and rot in the glass, where there were cracks in the ply stringers there were cracks through the hull in a couple of places. The last pic shows the one just fwd of the helm.
Just realised it's quite hard to tell what the pics are of. They're taken looking straight at the inside of the strake the main stringer sits in. The really whiter bit is the 'corner' of the strake, if that makes any sense? It's a really hard bit to photograph!
That's all for now! I'm really glad with the progress, but I'll be a lot happier when this stage is done! Next step is to get that last bulkhead out of the bow, finish grinding the sides and transom, then flat it all back with a sanding disk ready for glassing
James
