Finished grinding the hull!!
Finally finished grinding the hull today!
I've gone about 18" up the sides too to allow me to feather out the layers over the hull. The chines are just as thin as the rest so could do with the added strength too! I would've done right to the top, but I've gotta get this main part done asap before growing starts in the vinery.
I'm now on the verge of crossing from ripping apart to rebuilding and god am I glad! If this had taken much longer I'm not sure I could've stuck it out!
Next job is to strip everything shown in the last photo off the transom so I can quickly sand the glass there down, and I'll be ready to start glassing! Norman Piette are currently trying to find out what quarter cut timber they may be able to get for me, they don't keep any in stock. That's looking like a very expensive option. Still not sure what to do there. I also need to decide how to make templates for the bulkheads, and just how many layers of glass I'm gonna put down (seeing as I'm down to just one layer of CSM in places) before I start with the stringers.
James

For bulkhead templates, I found 2x1 battens to be perfect for making a template.

Transom cleared...
Few more pics. Got everything off the transom last night, I can now sand this back about 18" up for the glassing. Obviously I'll avoid the area where the drive mounts so that still has a nice straight area to sit on.
I'm amazed really that the ply in the transom is in such good nick. It's a bit damp in places, but nothing more than that and definately not rotted in any areas. Can't complain though, one less thing to worry about!
Last pic is the pile of delaminated glass I peeled off the bottom after removing the stringers/balsa, and before I started grinding!

I'm pretty sure the bravo cutout would let in an unacceptable amount of water mate!
Not to mention that she'd fall apart if i even removed a single brace, let alone moved her!
Will hopefully be ready for June 5th, along with proper (inboard) power.
Get ready to have yer ass handed to ya!

How are you coming along, Larby? I've missed your posts - it intrigues me - the lengths you have gone to restore this boat!
I look forward to the next phase.

Haven't had a chance to get up there at all this week, been to busy organising the racing. I'll be up there later today to give it all a massive hoover out and get ready for the glassing.
Just waiting for a friend to pop up and work out how much I'll need, hoping to start glassing next week
Sometimes when i look at it I rekon I'll easily be done in time, then when i sit and work it all out it seems a bit optimistic!

Cheers Simon!
Doesn't really bother me how long it takes to go back together. I'd like to get it ready in time for some of this season, but more important is that it's done properly. It'll all be worth it in the end!
More than anything else I'm looking forward to an easy winter and a great season next year!

Quick update...
The grinding is now totally finished and I've spent an hour hoovering as much dust as possible off every surface! (obviously all will be washed with acetone too before work commences!)
I'm taking Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday off to get the glassing done within the correct timescale, so hopefully we should see stringers in and everything by the weekend! I may even get carried away and get bulkheads in too, but this is most likely going to be done at a later date.
Watch this spac for some serious progress!

As i just mentioned in the BJ thread i really can't decide what to do. It's got nothing to do with a respray, I'd decided long ago to stick with gelcoat, that's a minor little detail, it's the work needed to make her good/safe for racing again. I'm not the kinda guy to just hash something together and hope for the best, it's got to be right.
I really can't decide though, I'm really really tempted to just do whatever it takes to restore her. I really like her and she's a bit different, drives beautifully too.

Interesting to see that you looked into buying my boat without actually asking me a single question let alone a price!! I took it off the market a couple of years back anyway! Will be interesting to see your revenger finished. By the way my engine is not shafted I've simply had a full top and bottom rebuild through tubbys & leisure marine, there was a oil pressure issue after rebuild which has now been sorted. Having had a season off I'm now looking forward to a new season. Like you I always like things to be right.
Cheers,
Glen

Hi Glen,
Hadn't mean to cause any offence with that one, you know what guernsey's like, a few people had mentioned your boat being for sale and what kinda money you were looking for. When i said the engine was currently 'shafted' I probably didn't quite use the right term, I was just referring to the fact that it was in bits, I know how you mean about wanting everything to be just right!
Hope to see you out there some time this season!

Major progress at last!
After looking into the timescales required with glassing I took this week off to get the main part of it done. First job on monday was to learn how to glass in the morning, then get myself set up in the afternoon!
I sorted a bench to work from, measured up, then cut every piece needed for the first stage of the job.
Tuesday was spent prepping and cleaning the hull with acetone, followed by a 1oz layer of mat applied with epoxy for grip. I don't want old and new seperating! Didn't get any photos of this layer as the resin is brown, so you can't see it against the original glass!
Photos of the setup and pre-cut glass all over the boat!...
