Ring 20/Ring 21 - what is the difference ??

After finally receiving the go-ahead from my better half, I have started looking at options for my next boat. As I have an 18ft Ring at the moment I would prefer to go to the next size up, either Ring or Phantom. However, I have seen both Ring 20's and 21's for sale and I am interested as to what the difference is between the two is in physical length and is there any different handling characteristics between the two?

Why were two models made which are obviously so close together, was it to do with different racing classes?

Final question, would we be looking at the same width of beam and just a slight difference in length? My main reason for asking is the space I have for storage is tight on the width so need to keep a close eye on the boat/trailer dimensions

Not just the extra foot, and not only 2 models! I don't know how many variations there were of the 20 but there were at least 5 variations on the 21. The most common if these the 21 C is by far a much bigger boat to the 20 not just in length.

Thanks for the info, so the 21ft is bigger all round, not just in the length. Thats something I will have to watch - storeage, length wise is not such an issue, its the beam that could cause me a problem.

Sorry, when I said the two models I meant the 20ft and 21ft comparison. Was the 20ft designed for a different class? I have only seen Phantoms advertised as 16, 18 or 21ft but never 20ft.

The Ring 20 is 20ft10ich and 6ft 1 inch wide, the 21 is 21ft 4ich and 6ft 2 inch wide, it's also a bit deeper than the Ring 20. On the phantom boats they made the 16,18, 19, 20,21,23,25, and 28. The Phantom hulls are a harder ride than a Ring, but I think is a faster hull (only my opinion).

Id agree with that! Was going to say it but wasnt prepered for the onslaught!

Better go grab my tape measure and see if my proposed storeage area is big enough otherwise its back to negotiations for more garden space from the good wife.

I have a 21c, The gill bracket makes the overall rig longer and sets the engine away from the back of the Hull so the 6 inch difference in length doesn't tell the whole story. I heard that the 21 was built with twin engine installations in mind.

Having ridden in Phamtoms I would say the Phantoms are lighter and quicker, but the three different ones I have been in have all been very flighty - Bow up even in very small seas. In comparison, the Ring has a ballast tank that I hardly ever use.

As a leisure boat the Ring suits me far more than a Phamtom would.

The last of the 21s was the 21e. Looks different from all it's ancestors. The hull shape is different with much smaller spray rails and an enormous beam, but nevertheless, a quick boat.

Is the gil braket necessary on all 21's or just the 'C' versions. I have seen some fitted with and some without but could not tell you what versions they were.

The boat is used purely for pleasure and I must admit I am more than happy with my Ring 18. Solid boat and I did fit a bow tank after I shifted all the other weight aft. Used very infrequently.

Just looking to upsize and I still have a passion for the race boat designs hence the consideration for either Rings or Phantoms.

The search will start in earnest at the beginning of the new year when I have both time to spend travelling and space prepared to store it.
