Ring 20` Vs fletcher bravo 199

Hey

I’m eighter a ring 20 or a fletcher bravo 199, Both With mercury 225 optimax or a 300 promax... not sure yet.

My primary goal With the boat is speed and handling!

I know the 199 and love the Way it handles, but the ring 20 is new to me, but i like the looks of it.

Can anyone Tell me how the ring 20 performs compared to the 199 and do it need a lift to really fast? And Maybe a set of trim flaps to be more steady?

The 199 i have on my hand is With a mounted lift and a set of flaps wich is a Nice upgrade.

I need ups & downs

Thanks

Hi!

I also own a 199 Bravo with modified screen and a 225 Yam on her back.

In 2009 i was in a Ring20 on the baltic sea. Its a nice lookin boat and handles well. I felt like "at home" in the Ring. Both boats go well in the chop.

It depends on your cruising area:

a boat with lifter will increase max speed - good choice for calm waters and high top speeds.

if you ride on the ruff stuff, never install a lift - too much bowlift - this will cost you rough-water performance and adds more stress to the transom.
( thats why the bow ballast tanks in the Phantoms improve offshore performance ).

my 199 has no lift ,cruising area is the baltic sea - but it does 66 mph on GPS with 21" Enertia Propeller in combination with seastar pro steering its pretty stable but not extremely fast. Acceleration is more than crazy :-)

The downsize with the 199 is : the transom is only 20", if you have a higher transom you can raise the outboard more to get more speed and stability at high speeds.

You should also take a look on the P20 :-)

If you want to go fast in choppy and calm waters with lift - go for 21ft.
I was also in a checkmate 2100 pulsare with 300 merc XS , lifter and setback in calm and rough conditions on baltic sea. It goes more than 80 mph and handles well. But the checkmate's transom is built like a tank.

My personal opinion: if there are trimtabs on a Ring, Phantom or Fletcher 199 - there must be something wrong with the setup...

just my 2 cents and my 199 :

Hey

Thanks,
I have an idea that the ring 20 is heavier than the 199 and therefore slower but I’m not sure.
I’m sure both boats perform well in rough sea, but again I’m haven’t tried the ring 20.

The 199 have an issue when only one person is in it and speed is moderate/slow, then the boat tilts to the right... and this the trim tabs can eliminate.

Which boat is fastest?

you got me wrong - the 199 isnt faster than the Ring and its not heavier, almost the same weight.

the 199 isnt tilting in any way with one person, doesnt matter which speed.
If the 199 is tilting , then the outboard isnt mounted properly - you have to mount it off-center.
If the outboard ist mounted in center then the 199 should tilt to the left because of propeller - torque, or is the outboard a left hand rotation?

Imagine a drilling-machine: you drill a hole in the wall, it turns right. Your drill gets stuck in the wall - in which direction will the guy who holds the drilling-machine tilt? Right! to the left :-)

That means: a right hand rotation outboard has to be mounted 1.5- 2 inches to the left, seen when standing behind the boat.

Best regards!
Andi

Hi,

Well i haven’t tried the 199 alone but It was my friend (he is a boat dealer) who said that he got a 199 last year and he said that it tilted, and therefore he said that it was a nice thing with the trim tabs. He should know what he’s talking about since he had several go fast boats the last twenty years... but maybe I’m wrong :/)

Anyway....
I was just convinced that the 199 should be faster and better than the ring 20. Not sure why but that why I wanted som information from your guys :-)

I like both boats but just want the one with the best handling and speed

Regards

The issue with the low transom should not be an issue when a lifter is mounted right?

What’s the P20???

well,
the guy who installed the first outboard on our brand new 199 has mounted the outboard in the center. ( and yes, it tilted a lot, first we thought "what a shitty boat" :-) )

He should know how its done because he was also a dealer? LOL

Personally i trust an experienced mechanic much more than someone who is exprerienced in selling boats.
These Infos are directly from fletcher in the 1980's.

Yes, with a lifter on 20" there is no problem. The checkmate had also a 20" transom and went more than 130 kmh without any trimtabs. The boat has been rigged by a professional.

A P20 is a " Phantom 20 ", another great british boat :-)

There is also a guy from holland who owned a 199 with a 225 Merc and setback - it went more than 120 without trimtabs, a nice amount of speed for the power on the back. A guy who knows how it has to be done.

Just installing a lot of power without experience in rigging leads automatically to chinewalk and trimtabs.

My friend is a mechanic or was, now he owns the shop (it was he’s dads) and his dad is a former race boat driver in DK, but I get your point :-)

He’s last year 199 went 70-72 mph without lifter, and I’m hoping for 75+ mph if I decide to go with the 199 with lifter.

What is a setback? And who is the Dutch guy? One from this site or?

Where is the 199 for sale?
I have owed a few 199’s, a ring and a Phantom.
My choise is deffinetly the Phantom - both speed and not the least handling wise.

Its not listed anywhere...

The phantom is definitely a good looking boat!

Can you specify the difference between the three boats?

fletcher = 80s rubbish, janitor boat, never made for running fast
ring = 80s bread & butter boat, very well, fast & save in the ruff
phantom 19 = best driving machine you can get at the moment

My opinion on the Fletcher is that it is a good ‘allrounder’, and you have the space to move around in it, unlike the Phantom where you are sitting very tight. But fore going fast safly - deffinetly the Phantom.
(Thomas, give me a call if you need to talk about the boats)

... lots of space in a r20, as well as in p20, a lot more than in the narrow
199, not to mention the heavy nose, which kills hundreds of hp & torque

... dozens of phantoms and rings from 15/16ft up to 27ft with different engines went through
my yard since 1988, so please tell me anything else guys, but nothing about these boats

Do you think the 199 is narrower in the cabin than r20 and p19 ?
From looking at pics of the r and p they seem much smaller. The 199 can seat 7 and you can walk in between the seats ? It even got a ski locker in between.

The 199 is actually wider than the other two 😉
