You are right. The only teams running EPA engines last year were the Drakkar Inshore team with a Mercury and the CMN team running a Honda on their Azicat. The Mercury Moore beat the Honda Azicat by just 2 laps, close racing after 24 hours! If you only get to see one powerboat race this year make sure its the Rouen 24 Hour Race, its what all other events wish their's was like.

Rouen 24 Hour Race
Rouen 24 Hour Race, would anyone like to be included in one of the UK teams?
I have a short-list for team 2, both boats will be SL90 Race Fighters, powered by 90hp E-TEC motors.
I have not finalised the team, there are more names than spaces, but I would like to get the best mix possible.
There is a cost, (unfortunately!), but the effort will be done properly.
The race driving style is just as suited to "offshore" as "circuit", stints of up to 2 hours a time, but a hugely rewarding event with massive coverage.
If you would like a chance to participate, as a driver, or crew, feel free to contact me.
Age limit ... over 18.

The EPA engines raced in 2006, were the Mercury 60 4 stroke in Classe 1, the 200XS Optimax in Class 2 & the 225 Evinrude ETec in the Class 3. The CMN dropped the Honda 50 years ago.

Should have qualified my statement by saying in Class 1 last year. Teams have been using EPA for a while now in Class 3 and 2. This year the Hellcat team with have 'factory' support from BRP, which I think is a first for Class 1.

Sorry Chris but 2006 was the first year Class 3 had EPA motors.

Ok, so what class did the Mercury OptiMax engines run in when they won the race back in 1999?

Class 2 is a 2L category, as EPA engines are allowed a 30% bonus, the 2.5L 200XS Optimax fits. However they did start in the X - Experimental category.
