Safari Express info

Built and designed by Paul Brouns.Wood.4 x Merc = 540hp.Driven by G.Orio(Ivory Coast)

Opened up past Hurst in the extremely rugged CTC 71,and was towed in.

Boat was then used as a plug for the 1972 London -Monte Carlo competitors.

e.g. Conserve or Perish (Alf Bullen).Comfort (Bobby Buchanen-Michaelson) went on to become `Canicometoo`.Who Dares Wins (Viscount Slim) went on to become Miss Marine Auctions, achieved notority when drugs were found in boat on it`s return to UK.

Wasn't there another hull as well - new and unfinished it sat for years in the yard next to Cobbs Quay in Poole. Would have been back in the lates 70's / early 80's?

Cobb`s Quay

I`ll pass on that Adam. One of the few times I went to Cobb`s Quay, the projected team mate to Flying Fish was there.Speedy Jackie was to be the sprint boat, whereas Flying Fish was the rough water machine.Note the race numbers in sequence.

Remember seeing Speedy Jackie in someone's garden and being worked on - Holdenhurst part of Bournemouth back in the early 80's (I think) - but don't know happened to it after that.

Amendment

Have been reminded by an `old school` proof reader that `Who Dares` was not bringing in drugs.I should have checked the cuttings.
The boat was stuffed with Asians when brought back to the UK by a `back up` crew of 10 illegal immigrants and two of their cousins. They were hidden by the rubber inner tubes used to give the boat buoyancy.Suspicions were aroused when the owner went to see the boat when it arrived in the UK,and found that the forward compartment stank of urine.
So next time Swipewipes smells a bit odd ,we`ll know it`s just ballasted up for a rough race.

Ref Safari Express

Came across a cutting re Safari Express plus other snippets (1974).

BTW Jon,this is 300dpi,which is readable and printable.75dpi is still readable, far less memory but the printing starts to break up.It`s a case of doing low dpi and sveral pages if posted, but higher dpi and printable if in a Multimedia Gallery.

Lancer?

Safari Express was a Brouns Craft, designed by Paul Brouns. The other boats to be cloned from this were Conserve or Perish & Comfort/Canicometoo built by Pegasus Marine as well as Who Dares Wins/Miss Marine Auctions which was Vitraform built.
The racing Lancers were Marshmallow/Slipstream & Europa which were Lancer Marine built and Robert Tucker designed.
The hull below the chine line on a Lancer looks comparable to the Brouns Craft, even the spray rails look the same, although the Lancer has more freeboard aft.
Have you got inside knowledge to upset the history books?

I like the story about collecting a gas turbine from the Isle of Wight by removing the passenger door and seat of the car to bring it back - nice one the Nurses - I can see where the boys get it from!
