Shakespeare 650 advice/info ?

Does anyone have info on Shakespeare boats.

There a 1998 23ft 650 with a 5.7v8 down near dorset lake in poole for sale £16k.

I know they were English built and I think they are now out of biz?

But whats the hull build like and the handling?

Lovely boat!

Really nicely made.

They're still in business, but I think they mainly do contract laminating now, for companies such as Revenger ribs, plus a couple of their own ribs & sport fishers.

my mate from Bristol is now looking at this and other shakespeares as BiggestArms goes for faster..

we checked out the one in poole, and met the dog from the boatandoutboards photo!! lovely deep hull but v small cabin

does any one know where to track down stats on these 650's ?
how to get in contact with mr shakespeare?

would you expect 5mph more top end from the v8 over the v6, for 1998 what were the engine outputs? 210hp v 260hp
assume these are the carb (non efi) merc engines on alphas

Francis Whitley, (owner of Shakespear boats) is a very pleasant and helpful fella, he also reads this forum. I'll drop him an email to make him aware of this thread, as he may be able to offer some advise/info.

Just received this email from Francis, hope it helps.

"Hi Jon, thank you for the e-mail.

We made 5 of the 650 mk i and 17 of the 650 mk 2. The one at drivers was the first one we made with the volvo v8 and was shown at the soton show 1994.
If you have the hull number i can trace the early history. Most we fitted with merc v6 carb, or injection, a couple or so with v8 and a couple with volvo.
Approx top speeds 45 to 55 depending upon engine.

The hull is the same as the sportfish and the 720 rib that is at drivers.

We still have sales literature and tests on the vessels at factory. It's simply not possible to produce a boat like the 650 at anything like a saleable price in this country.

Please contact if you need further information and i hope to see you on the water later on in the season if we still have a demo boat in soton.
best wishes francis."

No sure how much they cost new but, yes looking at the quality of the fittings and build quality must of been difficult to compete on $ with US equivs...

Thanks for your help Jon, I would really like to get the specs, the boats a 1998 and I could get the hull number, there's also a few other I might need to cross checks

i may have a brochure i can dig out. Believe they started around around £25k for mk2 but cant remeber off op of my head. Alot of 650 owners are very ambitious with prices and as they look dated most people are not aware of their build advantages.

Nice heavy construction and good deep v.

The one Robs mate looked at is the one with the red stripe at Dorset lake .. (except the red stripe has just been removed so it's all white now!)

Theres another one in Hampshire with a V6, we are interested to see what the actual difference in performance is when out on the sea .. (obviously on paper its about 40 hp !) ....

the v8 is the one to go for ,the v6 carb when loaded is a bit slow out of the hole
