Going back to Ultimatum for a moment - I found it strange that the boat be restored to mint condition, only to be let go again - bizarre!! I´m sure it arrived at Cowes and grabbed lots of attention once restored, but alas I have lost my pics of it. Somebody must have some pics of it when it was restored?

I am going to nit pick Nigel, !
Ultimatum has never been restored.revampted, resurected maybe...
To restore is to restore to it's original state !! i.e mercruiser thru a vee drive onto shaft with bolster hipsters,
I know this sounds pedantic but it something I think we need to bear in mind if we are going to start saving our heritage.............
Soap box is now back in cupboard !!

The RB entrant Steve Creed has purchased a Cougar 38 from Henry Hector and is doing it up to original spec and has entered it in RB2. See listing on RB site. He is VERY serious about racing this boat and could do well. Don't know if this is the boat being talked about.

Ultimatum
Tim, I agree with you 100%, although TD did a cracking job restoring it, it didn't look right with the seats in it, it should have had the original bolsters.

Speaking of which, I think there should be a Boatmad Trophy of some sort for the Round Britain, I'll give it some thought.
How about, "The Boatmad.com trophy", Awarded to the boat that attains the highest average speed on any one leg during the 2008 RBR in the RB4 class.

How about awarding it to the team with the highest overall fuel bill.

Not much of an acheivement though, is it, anyone can put a boat together that gobbles fuel. It's really gotta be performance/Acheivement related.

Ultimatum
Nige, I saw it at Cowes after it had been restored/refurbed looked stunning except the seats didn't look right, should have had the orig bolsters fitted. Last saw it a couple of years back, total wreck again doesn't make sense? I have some pictures of it at Cowes but don't know how to post them.

Ok I agree - the seats were completely out of place - it was just such a shame to see what work had been done, only for it to look pretty awful in Littlehampton a short time later, having been rubbed down to show a zillion colours underneath.
BLue Mist - when you hit the reply button you are taken to the new screen image where you type in your reply. A little further down the screen if you scroll down is the Manage Attachments option. CLick on this - then on the next page you click on the button (examine? mine is in spanish!) that enables you to flick through your own computer files. Once you have the pic you want to upload you 'open' the file selected. Then hit the upload button. You then have to wait a few moments whilst it uploads. If it´s too big you will have to reduce it in size and try again (give it a new name otherwise you will lose the original larger picture). Once the pic is uploaded you then 'close this window' and return to the main reply screen. Then you send the reply. Hopefully it will work! Pm me if you want more help - we all want to see your pics!

When Tony bought Ultimatum, it was rigged for twin outboards. He had it re-rigged with a 454 390hp Second Effort OMC with Gil exhaust and incredibly long water jacketed tailpipes. It used an inboard gearbox (don't remember the make) running to a modified Cobra (not even a King Cobra) drive. The internal gearbox in the drive had been removed so in theory it would be able to handle the power.
Tony and I had took out the re-rigged Ultimatum for the first time in 94 and I seem to remember running at about 55mph at 4000 revs. We were out again a few weeks later and stuffed the boat at only 30mph or so in typical late afternoon Solent slop just off Cowes.
By the time Tony raced at Gosport, a fairing had been added and John Lambson was at the wheel. I don't remember why they retired but they did. Ultimatum raced once more in 96 at the very rough Southampton race (the one Jon and Tony Davis won overall) and stuffed very badly shortly after the start. Sidewinder, another Magnum also stuffed badly at virtually the same time while the boats were running pretty much alongside one another. The boat didn't race again and by 97 Tony was racing The Reefer.
Ultimatum was sold through Aruncraft to a German in 96 who paid for it but then disappeared. The guys at Aruncraft tried to locate him for a couple of years but never could find him. When Aruncraft re-located to Hillyards, Ultimatum went with them.

Personally I am really glad that Steve Creed has bought the Cougar for the RB 2008. I have been boating out of Littlehampton for the best part of fourteen years, and it seems that Cougar has been there rotting away forever.
My son Matthew has had a love for that boat since we first saw it years ago. The sign 'World Champions' on the side of the foredeck intrigued him as a young lad and in his words 'made it a very important boat'. What World Champions were they and gained the title in what race - anyone throw some light on it? .
He is eighteen now and we still have to go and look at 'Matts boat' each time we are down there. Especially now while the gel coat has been taken from the very sad oxidised pinky colour back to a deep red lusture, and the underside white gelcoat has a superb shine now.
This is now our family favourite and we will be routing for her all the way in the RB.

Nice pics Blue Mist! She sure looked good.
That German might be the same guy who paid the Cunningham Brothers to re-rig the black quadruple big block powered cougar 50 many years ago too. Shall see if I can find a pic of it.
the link for that Cougar 50 thread

Black Cougar
Nigel, Looked over the black Cougar you are referring to when it was being refurbed at Cunninghams. Serious bit of kit, remember Adrian Cronk had fitted four Blown big Blocks in it.(He started one up, nice!!! ) Friend of mine did the paint job. Have some pictures somewhere, will post!!!! if i can find them. Wonder where it is now??
