I think you'll find it was his ability to drive the phantom so well in the rough!

I remember racing OCR in Salcombe with Derek in the rough - and Sharon in her P16 was really quick and put a lot of the 2 litre boats to shame!

I think the thing is, that the B23's etc, are highly developed race boats, that when working within their 'envelope', are imeasurably better than the now rather 'generic' Phantom 21 sportsboat.
But, when the sea state reaches a point that the B23 is outside of it's envelope, it begins to flounder.
If driven with absolute commitment, that point where things change will I'm sure increase, but the fact remains that when it's in it's zone, a race between a P21 and a B23 is very much a one horse race, with the Mannerfelt an obvious winner, by far.
When outside it's zone, and consequently floundering, the old school P21 is, in the right hands, able to stay on top in quite severe conditions. A bit more blood & Guts old style if ya like.
It's noteworthy though, that Ian is a very commited driver and understands his boat, and he's clearly not short of driving skill either, so he makes a good entry when the others are out of their sweet spot.
I'm sure whatever boat he gets next, will be driven with the same commitment & thought, and I wish him well.

Thanks Jon and to all you other guys for the words of encouragement.
I will obviously be out trying next year but I am also a realist. Most of my racing career has been in Phantoms so to jump into something so totally different is going to take a lot of testing through the winter and all next season before I get anywhere near the true performance out of the boat.
Last time I drove a Mannerfelt it did not like being cornered like a P16 and it threw me out in Windermere in October. I was that cold it took me 4hrs before I could find the old todger to go and have a piss!!
Hoping to give the new steed a run this weekend so if I dont return, its been nice knowing you all!

I was in that race as well Cookee and if memory serves me correct Sharon was actually leading into the first turn with Bob Baker 2nd in his P20/XR2. We were back in 4th or 5th and it took us a full lap to get past her. She was one hell of a driver!

i meant without insulting phantom owners, phantom 21 is probably not the MOST legendary rough water boat int he world yet people consider ian and his p21 an unbeatable force... a good combination not one single entity thats all
