Steering issues

Hi,

I have a Ring 20 with a 225hp mercury v6 outboard using rack and pinion steering.

The steering is very very stiff to turn. I'm unsure of the make / model of the current set up. I can only imagine its the original steering system.

Any tips to freeing the steering or will i have to replace the whole system?

What systems do people run on Rings / Phantoms?

Any help would be much appreciated

Your system look like like a ride guide from Mercury, most of the time the salt comes between the cable and the core, if you grease it with a hand pump, sometime the external covering of the core burst and the grease doesn't go anymore inside and around the cable. With your engine and application using a single steering cable seen on your pictures is not a good idea in term of safety. time to upgrade to hydraulic steering . If your cable steering is hard to turn, there is a big amount of chance rust is already inside the core and stated to eat the cable. move to hydraulic steering asap.

Thanks. What system would you recommend for a reasonable price?

if your setup is above 60mph better to buy a seastar pro 1500psi pump or LS 350, for the price call hypromarine in UK for a new one, for a used one in good shape may be 88/900£ for pump+ hoses+ cylinder+ steering wheel. make a request on BM for a used one.
