I don't expect it would be deliberate. But, since the XS range appears to be Tornado, although they claim modified Tornado, and some Tornado hulls were based on the Phantom and Ring hulls, I guess a few folk might unwittingly have input to the XS designs.

I was once at the Tornado factory. The decks I saw being laid were just 3/8" ply with a couple of layers of csm on top.
I can't remember the size of the boats though so, being kind, they may have been small ones.

I know Tornado did a deal with Steve to use the hull of the P28 for their big rib of the time (9.5M I think) this was back in about 1997/1998. However, after borrowing the mould and removing the 1oz layup that had been done in the mould for protection until it's next use and moulding their 'plug', they then pushed the 1oz moulding back into the mould, along with all the dust, grit and shite that was stuck to it. this scratched the mould nicely, and meant a load of work was needed on it before they could build my boat.
Just to add insult to injury, they then claimed to have never made any boats from the design, so sorry, but no royalties (there was no charge for the initial use of the mould for the plug, just a deal to 'pay as you build')

I took some photos of a complete Tornado 9.5 in Cowes in about 2000, the owner told me there was about 6 examples of 'his model' at the time. I gave the pictures to Steve and he contacted Tornado. They agreed they had actually made a few boats and promised to cough up,...they never did...nice.

bit of a scam for some one to pull. hope he got his money back. i always get amased by the boat building industry. it gets a bit cut throat at times.

Steve Baker never saw a single penny from Tornado.

A fine, honest and upstanding company.

What about the smaller Tornados? Were these similarly based on Steve Baker's designs?
