Surfury

I am trying to raise publicity and support to save Surfury the 1960's class 1 offshore powerboat that was designed by Sonny Levi and raced by the Gardner brothers. I know a few have been ware of this issue but for a full update please see www.surfury.co.uk
Currently "Surfury" faces a major threat in that she is in poor condition and that the NMM now are being forced to place her into storage - away from the public domain. Her future- if this happens can only be terminal.
I f any of you have any material, photos, film or recollections that you may wish or be willing to to share please let me know. I am talking to MB&Y about running an article to support this programme. We are also hoping that she could possibly be allowed to be staticaly displayed at the Cowes racing weekend at the end of August.

We have been contacted by a number of potential stakeholders as well as the Gardner family (Charles & Richards are sadly no longer with us) who are interested in preserving Surfury. There is also interest in her from the USA as her Daytona engines and transmission uniquely remain untouched since her last race in 1970.

So- Guys if any of you can help in any way to campaign for her to remain in the Motor Boat Museum at Basildon or to assisst in publicity, funds etc please contact me through the website of by EMail to chris.grayer@btinternet.com

I don't understand why she would be removed from display at basildon - regardless of condition, she's probably one of the most complete, significant, boats there?

Surfury is a piece of Offshore racing history. It's a very bad idea to put it in storage.
I sent to you all pictures of Surfury from my archive. If will made a save found for restore it let to know us.

It´s a shame I´m not a millionaire because I would love to construct a powerboat museum to showcase the classic machinery that has raced in english waters. It got me to thinking - if such a place were to exist - where should it be? Cowes or Hamble?

Ho hum, I´m not a millionaire but shall be digging into what shallow pockets I have to send towards the saving of this historic boat. I´m only sad that I was a bit too young to witness the boat in action. My earliest memories were of Lady Nara and the like.

History

Would anyone have any pics or film or the following boats?
Miss Polly Perkins or Giovanna as my father-in-law Edward Bowdler was a crew member on both of these and competed in Cowes-Torquay Classic and round Britain in the 60's.They were owned by a man called Ron Watts and they also competed in Miami sometime in the 60's,early 70's.We have found one pic so far and a peice of footage which was provided by Tony Hamilton as he and Ted competed against each other,it would just be nice to find some stuff so Ted can reminise over the good old days, the same as us lot do when we see footage of ourselves racing.

Chris,
Who actually owns Surfury?
Have you done a budget of each of the options available, ranging from continued storage where it is, mothballing, preservation, cosmetic restoration, full restoration, etc?
The lottery seems on face value to be a likely candidate, however I've been watching the restoration of Vulcan XH558 and if I remember correctly lottery funding to restore it is exceptional and unlikely to be repeated.
Cheers
Matt

I remember Polly Perkins, may have old Black & Whites somewhere, I'll have a dig around over the next week or so.
Would have been a great boat for the round britain but the two shaft/ drive rule knocked that into touch, I recall at the time that there was talk of it being made a twin for the race but it never happened.

I think the thing should have a bit of lottery cash, a more deserving case than the Guinea pig farmers of South America or One legged gay / lesbian Committee’s it quite happily hands out wads too.

Fantastic photos - these will be on the website just ASAP. Do you have the detail as to how & when etc. Clearly these were taken at Souters in Cowes during 1965 and I assume Wilf Souter is one of those engaging with the crane. I have met Michael Souter his son who also helped with her construction. Thanks so much for these - anybody else out there got anything else?

Ain't Boatmad a great place people have all kinds of stuff tucked away. Great pics Adam.
Surfury I must say was always the peoples champion for some reason. People would really clap & cheer as it went by chasing the next boat, hoping it would beat the American or Italian all quite patriotic really...............But in a nice way.

I worked in the Souters design office after leaving college in 1986. Unfortunately the glory days were long gone by then although we did have a few interesting boats go through.

It was a crying shame that most of their archives including drawings and photographs were binned. These were a few photographs that I 'saved'!

The one with the crane is the boat being weighed.

A few more:

this one is labelled 'under tow' - but probably more due to her lack of slow speed ability and being towed out to the muster area?

final one - just labelled 'in the shop'

Surfury can be seen in the background. Another smaller Levi hull can be seen as well. Could be the hull that was 'modified' to become the first Don Shead design?

That shot ´on tow´ really shows what beautiful lines the boat has. Does anybody out there have one of the old SHG Marine Surfury models?? I always wanted one of those! (And they made a scale cigarette 36 too!).
