Thats what I call a Diesel

Audi's new v12 supercar 5.9 LTR's of compact diesel technology from the Le Man's racer pumping out 500hp and it's even quicker than it's petrol counterpart, if this was ever to be used in a marine application it could put a dent in Mercury's 525 and 600hp sales especially as it will probably have a reasonable rev range

diesel

The engine is not that heavy ,its made from aluminium, block&heads.
the rpm range is 5000 + and that is the nice thing about this engine ,it has a long powerband ,and thats good

I have a 5,9 litre cummins diesel 24v common rail in my pick up truck,it has a short powerband 3500 rpm max ,but put out 550 BHP and 1100 ft/lbs max
it an do this ,because of the twin stage turbocharging and 50 psi boost pressure, mercruiser /cummins (CMD) offers the same engine (QSB 5,9) with 480 hp with a single turbo

Audi state it produces 1000NM at 1750rpm this would prove very useful as a boat engine and could cope without ventilating or 2 speed transmission I would imagine, it is said to be only 6inch longer than the petrol unit and as it is based on the 650hp Le Man's diesel now detuned to 500hp so should prove reliable also the Le Man's racer was reasonably light as you would expect for a race car so it must be assumed the engine is a light weight maybe lighter even than Merc petrol engines of similar HP...Maybe Audi could be persuaded by a P1 team to sponsor and develop this for racing now that would make a big splash in the offshore racing world

don,t know what the audi block weight complete ,but assume it is 400 kg at least, even an V 12 alu lambo is +- 350 kg ,I think the rotating parts must been much heavier to live under the high compression and high boost .

I heard a rumur a while ago ,they said Steyer is busy to develop a V 12 ,to use two 6 cilinder ali blocks ,but I don,t know if anything is true.....

The engine, the same unit used in the forthcoming Q7 V12 TDI, is derived from the diesel used in Audiís Le Mans-winning R10 circuit car. Because the V12 is a relatively compact unit, Audiís engineers have been able to slot it into the R8ís mid-mounted engine bay. And by using a stronger type of cast iron than usual, they have cut the thickness of the cylinder walls which helps to reduce the engineís weight.
I assume this meant they were cast iron, and not ally blocks.

Liners rather than blocks?
