Hi All,
The new bell housing kits arrived from Volvo these have now been assembled and are ready to be mounted, these will locate the engines 5.1" further forward allowing plenty of space for the bigger turbos i have also completely reconditioned the transom shields, trim cylinders and steering cylinders. As you can probably guess.... cutting bits of that aren't necessary along the way

Hi All,
Nearly finished the lightning work in the engine bay also removed the original engine mounting pads. All the gel wash is going to be removed and work starts on glassing up the transom holes this week.

Hi All,
A few photographs of the restoration of all the mechanical parts, the drives are now also assembled and ready for paint. I am now starting to make the fly-by-wire steering system.

Hi All,
Engines have definitely got to go in at 800mm centres now as i have cut the tie bar...... it will be tight... also the through transom 7/16 JIC bulkheads arrived so i machined of the hexagons and gave them a polish.

Peter your attention to detail is superb. following this thread is addictive (as with your other Hunton thraed of course), and educational. However I am a little concerned that the big smile on your face in picture 4 is caused by the finish you've achieved on the polishing and not the calendar girls!!
Keep it coming!!
all the best
Moose.

Hi Moose,
Firstly Thankyou for your interest,Paul/Renegade complained that there wasn't a "GIRLY CALENDAR" in the workshop so i bought him one for christmas unfortunately it didn't arrive until Wednesday and although he is VERY passionate about his engineering i know the smile was generated by the "BOOBS & ASS" i know this because i am Carolyn the wife.. when he isn't engineering something he is pestering me for...... you guessed it.....It made his day when it arrived and i am sure there will be many more pictures to follow throughout the year, February looks very interesting so he tells me as he has had a sneak preview

Hi All,
Picked up a sheet of carbon fibre from Carbon Weezel at the weekend that i have made into a combined bulkhead closing panel and filter mounting bracket also re-assembled the filters with new seals after their repaint.

Hi All,
Stripped and checked Cheetah's trim pumps i will be adding another pair to power the carbon fibre trim tabs, also designed and manufactured a pair of manifolds to connect both sides of the steering cylinders for some reason volvo only power one side. Been chopping up carbon fibre again this time to make cover plates for the transom shields.

Hi All,
Mounted the trim and tab pumps to carbon fibre plates along with the polarity changeover switches, this saves 8kg compared with the standard volvo brackets, also made some spreader washers for the transom shield bolts these save a further 2kg over the rather agricultural volvo standard issue, they also spread the load into the transom much more effectively.

Hi All,
I roughed out the plug for making the carbon fibre trim tabs from a piece of 5mm thick aluminium plate, also ordered some carbon fibre tube that will be built in to form the hinge.

Hi All,
Picked up some 5" diameter stainless exhaust tubing that Simon Wood power at Oval Stainless rolled to oval for me, he also water jetted a stainless steel grill that will be used to form a low drag water pickup system. Also painted the latest design of power steering and water pumps which are now installed on the engines.

Why the upturn at the end of the tab Peter? I would've thought that would cause some really negative effects? I would've expected the tab to need to be flat with a sharp trailing edge to break from the water as per the hull/transom transition?
Surely that upturn will cause downwards drag and stop the tab from breaking away from the water surface?
I've been thinking about making some carbon tabs, but was looking to build them as rocker tabs as used by arneson. They'd mount level with the bottom and bend rather than hinge. Essentially they'd act as a hull extension but when up (ie above horizontal) they keep grip to the water and can create bowlift by essentially pulling the back of the boat down, pivoting it on it's centre of gravity.
Hence why I can imagine your design causing the same effect, even when slightly down?
Not a criticism of course, just an observation!
James

paint
Hi Peter,
looking at your amazing attention to detail, what paint are you going to use on the drive lowers and will you antifoul? if so which type for drive/hull.
regards

Hi James,
Both of the Hunton projects have pads which give additional stern lift, the trim tabs are mounted quite high up the V to allow steering movement for the drives so when the boat is running at high speeds the tabs are completely clear of the water so by curving the last part of the tab upwards when they are used in their operating range the curved part becomes parallel with the water hopefully reducing the drag associated with a standard flat tab and making it's action much more progressive. As a life long development engineer i am always looking to improve the performance of any parts i design and manufacture, not always totally successful...... but if you don't try you never know.....

Hi Harry,
I use super etch brushed on for the first coat this allows you to work the paint into the porosity usually found in aluminium castings then sanded back to remove any brush marks followed by a couple of sprayed on coats, then one heavy coat of high build two pack undercoat finished of with two coats of two pack car paint. As our boat is kept in a dry stack there is no need for us to anti-foul and the process seems to hold up very well, hope this helps....

Peter
