Old boats racing
Look you lot lets get back to the original thread shall we!
In 5 years time it will be the 50th anniversary of the best Powerboat Race in the world the now defunct Cowes Torquay
I fully intend Thunderbolt to be on the water and well tuned in by then, Contango another of the original '61 boats is also in restoration and the Fairey owners club has half a dozen of the old Huntress/ Huntsman racers still going strong this is a chance to show these round in circles P1's what an old fashioned boat could do and they looked a damn sight better too!
If you got an oldie get it up together and if you know where they are buy em quick the Yanks have already got a head start WWW.HISTORICRACEBOATS.COM, Ghost Rider may be displayed at Cowes in August!. iF YOU LOSE THEM NOW YOU WONT GET THEM BACK!
THUNDERBOLT in restoration
SURFURY IN A MUSEUM waiting to be put in storage
TELSTAR restored but where now
A'speranziella restored and vanished
and the others ?
Lets get our own historic register going

As JF said his mate purchased the drives, I would assume the engines were long gone, if I remember, I think they were Sabre marathon diesels around 7ltr and 600hp so I would imagine to find a simular unit to fit today and perhaps have the odd entery to events such as P1 would be rather tricky especially not exceeding 6ltr, perhaps seatek if they still did the 6ltr unit ?????

Were they not based on a Ford unit of the mid 80s from the truck division marinised by Sabre, seem to remember we overtook it on the Thames long time back after the race the guys showed me the engines, they had just been rebuilt and were running in and a bit tight I was told a top speed was around low 70s but 80ish was expected when loosened up they were 500hp then so the Guy said

Only the very last generation of 'Marathon' motors were 630 hp. As fitted to 'Debenhams'/'Shockwave'.
And they have have two stage turbo charging and intercooling, not 3.
I think Rijuga ('Manhatten's previous name) had 600's.
The original motors were tuned, beefed up Ford Cargo engines, but as the power increased with each succesive versions, the main components were changed for specialist replacements, which I believe included the block by the time they got to 600hp, as it simply wasn't strong enough. the replacement casting was much heavier, with more webbing etc.

Follett/Manhatten found.
One very dusty Follet/Manhatten discovered and uncovered at last by its proud and very persistent new owner. Speedmaster 3 drives still fitted and intact with an assortment of propellers plus one very dusty 600 odd hp Sabre (marathon?) diesel engine fitted with 3 turbo’s. All not much to look at at the moment but by this time next year should be powering up and down the Solent at various races in its new livery and coming out (hopefully) on the Poker runs.

Drives and tabs. Those bottom ends look as though they are going to need a bit of polish!
