Nice thought !
Sadly, it may not be possible at present, due to the number of safety boats req'd to "sanitise" a channel through the Solent, & HM Harbour Master in Portsmouth probably not too keen to allow racing in his waters (ie. East of Cowes to near Bembridge).

There are thoughts being given to a possible marathon type race from west of Cowes, around the Needles & St.Catherines, & either turn off Sandown, or out to The Nab, & retrace outward route. I'm sure Class 3 boats could manage that ?

That's not strictly true Martin. See my previous post here. The DQHM in Portsmouth told me that a race could be held around the Island including coming back down the Eastern Solent as long as it was held BEFORE 1st May when - in his thinking - the Summer period begins and that part of the Solent becomes busy. Might get a bit of flexibility there though. Also, all boats would have to stay at least a mile from shore at all times within his area.

From the comments on here there is obviously interest for such an event to happen again for ALL classes of raceboats. Just needs a club to have the guts to do it, maybe running out of Drivers and starting and finishing at East Lepe as per the BPRC Marathon event in 2009!

round the island race

if any club or group of racers are considering making this happen then as well as entering the race id like to help organise in any way and offer a half dozen safety boats with local guys to cover western solent/needles.
Nick.
