Cheeky! I will let Mike Ring answer that one. What are you doing up at
2.13am in the morning, no wonder you "don't do mornings".

Morning Mike, you old devil you!
I'm about 40 minutes from Monte Carlo so in the planning stages to the race I can run any little errands you need. Not too bad on the old Franglais if necessary.
As for the race, well, guess I'd better get planning
All the best
Jonathan

Hey, less of the old! In that case we could use you down there when you are home. Will keep in touch, now, what boat are you going for?

Hi Bigdog,
Articles on the '72 race from Motorboat & Yachting here:
http://boatmad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17148&page=2
I am unlikely (given my current financial situation!) to have finished my boat by then, though I do hope to have the deck and transom completed...
So i would like to volunteer to be a driver for any teams that need a back-up / support vehicle...
No HGV I'm afraid, but reading through accounts of previous marathon events (RB69, 84 & 08) it appears that one of the "rare breeds" is vehicles travelling to the next port-of-call !! If nobody wants me, I shall follow it in my car and be able to give people lifts.... Was going to take two weeks off to follow RB11, so plans have changed
P.M. me if you want a reliable driver at no cost!
Oh, and thanks Mike, for taking-on the impossible... yet again!

Cowes is a much better venue. We know it and we know how it works. London would be a logistical nightmare and we will have enough of those as it is without adding more. Cowes stays as the start!
Massive response and emails today. Three more "count me in's" and we will have passed our target number of runners, quite amazing really. Long way to go yet though.

Better start saving again!
My folks did the last race and got a fishing net round their props off Brest, they then took their Tremlett down the Canal du Midi to the finish and then kept the boat in the South of France for a couple of seasons. My school summer holidays were fab and powerboat racing is in my blood and is proving difficult to shake off!
I think I could do with some good diesels for this race......anybody got any ideas?

But it really should be London though. The race just doesn't have the iconic status if it starts from the Isle of Wight, and it would have a much higher public profile in London.
Wet pits at St Katherine Docks, start from Tower bridge for one of the best photo ops in the world, marshalled trundle down river and through the barrier, flag drops once the fleet is in more open water. Even if racing proper didn't start until Gravesend it would have to be worth it. Could even make it a prologue stage and start the actual racing from Ramsgate the next day.
OK, so it would need some work, but there's a while to sort things out. I'm sure we could put together a team to handle the London end of things so that it doesn't add to your workload.
Got to be worth looking at?

That's what you said about RB08
Whatever happens though, it sounds like it's going to be an epic. Thanks for making it happen.

Hit a few logs, damage a prop or break a drive leg, pick up a couple of bags and cook an engine all before the race. Some of us have been there and done it. Sounds like a great idea Barry. Go for it.

You've just seen a Harwich marathon race with a course designed to skirt around the limits of PLA jurisdiction. Let's just say there was good reason for doing this and it wasn't for sight seeing benefits.

How long ago did you go down the thames Mike
2006 we launched from Putney on the eve of Blade Run event at 19.55 and had to make St katherines by 20:13 because of the lock closing. Hit 70mph under the bridges and just made it even got pulled by the police not for speeding but because of a bridge with a flashing light.
Following day 20 odd boats left the thames for Ramsgate and not one suffered any damage.
That was in the Revenger before the transom broke but that's another story.

I'm working on the thames and trust me there is a lot of debris in the water still, rope is another problem, as well as large lumps of wood. I would love to see london race but I have to admit there is a good chance of damage. But if anyone needs thames info give me a shout.
