Batteries!

I have the oppertunity now to play with the electrics in the V24.

I am looking at two seperate things:


1) A small but efficient battery to power the starter, and to keep the boat running.

2) A second small battery in the cockpit to drive the electronics.


First part is obvious, second part is more difficult. Sometimes during a race we loose battery power for a tiny fraction of a second. This murders the electronics, and we have to reset everything, which is a mission when you are supposed to be racing! So what I wanted to do was insert a small rechargable 12 volt battery in line with the main supply, with possibly a diode or something to stop reverse current flow, to 'even out' the 'dips' I get in the electric supply. Anyone have an idea on this?

An older boat of mine had such a system to power the radio when the main batteries were off ( or submerged )

I wouldnt use a second battery, I would put decoupling capacitors across the supply local to the systems you have to reset after the dip in the supply, I guess that would be your GPS etc. The capacitors will hold the supply up for a short time during the dip from the main power source!!!

When we were racing the Extreme, we ran with a DMS technologies sealed battery, tiny thing, about the size of a motorcycle battery! never a problem starting, or running the 8.2 litre EFI mercruiser, and so small & light, it was easy to mount, didn't try to beat the boat, or battery location to bits, and generaly 'the way to go'. not cheap mind!

Why did I not think of that.....


To be honest I tried. I traced all the wiring and checked all the connections, but I cant see anything wrong... It happens if I take on a load of water and when I hit a heavy wave ( big bump - no water )

WE have been running a hand held for the short periods we loose the main GPS.
