Looks to me like the throttle sticks open. Can't imagine even the most stupid of us would keep the tap open in that situation.

Found some pics, apparently dated 2001. The crash was apparently the 2002 opener race - so if they're not the same event, it might just be a driving style:

That blows my theory outta the water!
In pretty much all of those still shots, the butterflies are shut, so unless it's running on engine oil/some other fuel getting in by mistake & the nitrous (instead of the required air) I'm wrong, as usual.

Wicked spill though eh.

I thought she blipped the throttle. I may be mistaken but I think if a land based drag racer gets out of shape a burst of throttle can sometimes straighten things out. No?
