That's that stupid boat which was so unstable that the crew were strapped in do avoid being thrown out. Unfortunately no-one bothered with any sort of windscreen/ deflector.
The boat rolled at speed, the crew lost their heads.

And a decison had to be made:-

Ban seatbelts/ straps/ harnesses

OR

Introduce canopies

A little simplistic I admit, and a bit of a rant. And I bet I am shouted down. But I know what I think!

I don't know anything about the boat, but as Nige says it's a great shot.

It always looked a handful when running hardly the most stable rig. The thoughts I recall at the time were not "If" but "When".

Do we know if that picture was taken during it's final/fatal race?

Or indeed, how many times the boat ran in UK waters prior to the accident? (I'm assuming it's taken in the UK)

Certainly a absolutely superb photo, especially in it's original high resolution version in the gallery. But then, there are so many such pictures in Grahams collection, it's almost sensory overload when going through them.

Graham/Flying Fish, I can't thank you enough for sharing your superb gallery with us!
I see many of the pics are very recent indeed, and I hope you continue to increase this unique collection for many years to come.

Couldn't agree more JF. There are pics there of boats that Dad & I have raced over the years that I thought were long lost. Others that I have seen in there glory days. If I ever get time I'll have to do a little note on them & were some had there final day.
i.e Turantula, was sold on to Dick Ridout when he moved up from class IV. First race of the season (Sandwich) OPC it appeared as Custard Beast 3 or 4 ???? was going like a train and held a huge lead but the boat finally broke, pretty much almost in two just behind the crew, they managed to beach it where a much younger BluFin helped drag it up the beach.

I was assuming that it was taken at the infamous Needles Trophy race. The conditions look about right. Anybody know that background?? Out towards Old Harry?? I think I may have been on the same boat as Graham for that race. (brain fade!)

It was 1987 Needles Trophy. When there used to be a European Class 1 Championship. The British heats were, for a few years, Needles, Cowes & Brixham. All in August & September.
I was mark boat at Hengistbury for that race.
