Cougar Beast

Just spent a few minutes looking at boats for sale via the Motor Boat and Yachting Brokerage web page. Saw this. Nice toy! I think I saw this at the Cunningham Brothers Yard in Littlehampton a few years back.

I bet it would get a lot of attention if it was stopped by Customs on a balmy summer night just outside of Miami or somewhere similar!!!

yep that beast was down littlehapton about 5-6yrs back, maybe less, adrian kronk was working on it, it was one of the reggata weekends they do, wen the race is on,

lets put it this way i was standing mere inches a way when they started it, my god! i wanted to wet myself.

the first got fired, that was enough, then the second, then the third, then the fourth.

from mem it has for v-12's on mercruiser bravo-x drives i think, and the boat is ally! does around 120, they said it had more but the got scared!

i want it!

PJC will know exactly what it was.

Being Quad motor, I would have thought it has to be an ex US 'Superboat' class, ie, 'Popeyes', 'Spirit of the Amazon' or 'Maggies Mercruiser Special' tho I thought the later had gone to Japan.

Now that you have jogged my memory, I'm pretty sure it's Eike Batista's Spirt of the Amazon. Canopy is certainly the right shape although I don't remember the air scoop on top.

About three years ago, TD and I looked at 'Spirit of the Amazon' at a boatyard in old Griffin road, Ft Lauderdale, engine-less and sad looking

I think it was Tres Martins old place.

may even have some pics, i'll have a look.

Come to think of it I'm probably full of crap cause the boat in the first pic looks like it built in fibreglass and Spirit ain't!

Looks like the same boat that i saw in a boatyard just out St Tropez 2 and half years ago, at the time i though it was a cougar as i could not get a good look at it. I took a picture of it and will look it out and post it tonight.

I did see it up on a French auction site about a year ago with a starting bid of €50,000

not sure if it is still on their site. (Their site encompasses many other brokerage companies around the globe).

Looking at the pic again it is definately the same boat I saw in the South of France as there was a German flag on the rear of the boat and the pic that littlenige has posted show that in the topleft hand corner.

That was a very eventful trip down to the south that year, saw a couple of Cigarettes a lot of Riva's and an old J Class rag and stick a friend of mine's family used to own .

Amazon sold a few years ago and was still in pretty good shape. I would think that the black one is some boat that never made it state side. Very cool looking though, I wonder what the real history of it is?

The matt black boat is a 50’ Cougar it was built in 1988/89 for a German as a play boat, it was a copy of the original Popeye’s Superboat built in 1983, construction was aluminium and it was powered by four Mercruiser 575hp engines on Mk 4 drives in the early 90’s we gave it a refit and added the canopy, the engines where replaced with four Zule 750hp, in 2001/2 it had another refit at Cunningham’s in Littlehampton and I think the engines had super chargers fitted

The other aluminium Cougar Superboats where
Popeye’s Famous Fried Chicken
Eric’s Realty
Gentry Turbo Eagle
Spirit of the Amazon
Maggie’s Mercruiser special
Mercruiser Special (Monohull)
Maxon (Monohull)
