Crummy old shots

Sorry they are so bad! I discovered I could scan the original negatives for these lost shots into the pc using my scanner - then hit the 'negative' option. VOila!!! Makes you appreciate the amazingly good photographs from that era by the likes of Graham and the pro's of the day like Thibideau etc.... (but then I was only 10/12 years old when they were taken - on what was probably the worst camera money could buy back then!)

So when do you think those shots were? I would have thought about 1973, I am sure that Graham can give us a definitive date. Looking at the Dry Martin shot in the old Groves and Gutteridge shed, I can remember standing in exactly that same position watching an engine change if it was say 1973 and I would have been about 10 !
I always thought that Archidiavolo in shot 4 was the most wonderful boat. I seem to recall that Derek Lloyd navigated in Cowes ?

Blitz (000) + Anything Goes Thuz, Dry Martini, = 74
American Eagle Yellowdrama II Thunderbird = 76
Radio Rentals - 75 Graham?
I think the other bow-on shot of Blitz with the Tudor Rose on the bow was when the boat raced under No. 24 (1976) and crashed during the race which would make the chap in the cockpit Mike Bontoft's Dad.

Martini wrap around screen - pretty sure this boat had the screen in 75 but not sure about 74.....Graham?

I stand to be corrected on a couple of boats - Arcidiavolo was 75? It's not in the '74 entry list.

Deffinately 1976 I was in I Like Too, and we raced and beat American Eagle in the Needles poole race and the CTC.

I remember when we bought the boat, Charles Gill was not going to sell those engines at any price. He had cured the head gasket problems by replacing them with "O" rings. Fothergill and Harvey comes to mind. I am sure Jimmy remembers it well.
Littlenige, Yes that was dad. Looks like the navigator Vick Jenkinson on the dock. The throttleman was Mike Woolford.

Ctc 76

I Like It Too`s win was down in some ways to good navigation.Down at Portland we never saw American Eagle or Unoembassy go past.Don was trying to lose Gentry in the misty conditions.Poor old Don had to drive and throttle and just for good measure, navigate too.Just as well because Col Ronnie Hoare (part of the Geriatric crew as they were known),used to drop all his navigation cards on to the cockpit floor around Don feet,as they were banging and crashing on.

Yes Mike I do remember the dam "o" rings and the nylon buttons instead of circlips in the pistons, they didn't always work.

Yes it was all down to navigation, we all turned the Torquay mark together but it was so foggy we couldn't see more than 100 mts, all the rest of the boat went off in defferent directions, we in I Like it too just raced on in the fog, we arrive back in Cowes not knowing we had won.

Yes if I remember rightly it was a surprise to everybody who approached the winners berth! Gentry thought he'd won! This shot was taken in the shed afterwards - Mr Kiekhaefer in the hat. I even have a crummy recording of the conversation that went on in there! (if the audio tape it hasn't crumbled by now!) Mr K was overhead in a chopper for a lot of the time. Bobby Beich and Norma/Tom/Richie were all discussing what went wrong.

I would love to know what was said in that conversation, they did the shame thing in the Needles race the week before, they just got lost.
We did an engine in, I change a prop and we finnish on one motor and still beat them in to second with Dry Martini first.

And More

PART 2

Alitalia Uno spun backwards at 80mph off Brixham.I seem to remember `I Like It Too` was supposed to have swapped ends several times in the Needles race 1975.Is this true Jimbo?

Delta 28

The tailfin was for stability with all that torque from 2 engines on a single prop with only a 28ft boat, but it fell off and frightened the life out of Mr.Shead,so that was that.

A lot of the boats back then removed the skegs, presumably to keep up with the Jonse's in the speed department. That must have increased the chances of a 'end swap' no end.

Yes we did swap ends and went in backwards up to the cockpit at 82 mph flat out, trying to keep in front of Don Shead only once in that race.
I always cut the skegs off, it made about 2 mph.
