Small world

It’s certainly a small World, I have owned a house for the past 7 years in a small village (just 550 inhabitants), called Villa la Ñata, about 20 miles North of Buenos Aires.

5 years ago prior to being elected Provincial Governor for the first time, Daniel Scioli bought up half the village and installed himself in a nice riverside property on the banks of the River Lujan- complete with private marina, helipad and private powerboat museum.

Last time we met was back in Guernsey 1986 – he was racing in 4 litre worlds and I was running our old Marathon cat in class 2- happy days!

Ah yes 4 litre boat a ply catamaran with blue and red stripes-Frigidaire
was a very tasty rig almost as nice as NZ1 the New Zealand entry that won the title that year.
The model Yacht Pond was drained for that event and the pits were put in there

Some achingly beautiful Argentinian ladies also accompanied the boat and team.In hindsight I should have paid more attention to them but it was boat heaven that week!

A little later on am Argentinian team contested the two litre worlds in Guernsey in an ally monohull sponsored by the lottery-Lotto
Used to race on the river Plate
Wonder if they were related ?

Scioli's Museum & Guernsey '86

Nigel,

The museum contains at least one of his cats, models, archives etc- it is private and by invitation only.( His gardener told me about it !)- although technically "neighbours" I haven't been round to borrow any sugar yet (or a spare Seatek..)

Simon,

I also have fond , if distant, memories of Powerboat week '86 -we swopped a new Mariner 200 with Jason Hunt for his pair of 2.4s .

Sadly we only had a couple of days testing and although we ran nicely for the first 10 minutes of the race we threw so much spray into the cut-down cowls we were only running on a few cylinders meanwhile the Holley fuel pumps were still emptying the tanks at a great rate -consequently we kept speeding up and slowing down until we finally ran out of fuel about half way to Goulliot.

The William Arnold towed us back to Town! Drank a bottle of champagne on the way back if I remember (kept on board for medical emergencies)

Attached is a scan of the entry list that reads like a who's who of offshore racing in the mid '80s- Apart from stars from Guernsey Powerboat Assoc, plenty of names including Steve Curtis, Tolman Twins, Gerve, Casiraghi, Didier Pironi, Lady Arran, Michael Frode etc etc etc.. many current boatmad members there too (inc Adam younger, Mike Lloyd)

Its hard to believe it was over a quarter of a century ago!!!

Cheers Guy

Any chance of a larger Picture? My Mince Pies are not what they once were.

The Argie and NZ 3D cats had a coming together in the 1st heat and more handbags on the pontoon if memory serves me.

I missed most of it, too busy racing against and beating Guernsey and Jersey racers in the 3B Worlds.

Er, I am no Flying Fish, but I think you will find that entry list is 1985.

Fairly sure I am correct, Mike Lloyd was having early nights in those days in training for his massive projects a quarter of a century later.
