Fast Cats & Phantoms!

1970's TV at it's best!

Another gem from the Graham Stevens collection.

This 'Southern TV' documentory on the 1975 London-Calais-London race, truely captures the 70's feel.

I've split it into part 1 & part 2, but they're still feckin massive, around 130meg each, so set ya download going, and enjoy.

Steve Baker & his 60 year old dad in the 4 litre Phantom 23 'SPECTRE' get to win the 253 mile race, thanks to the 4 litre Stapely cat 'Miss Nova Arts' breaking an upper engine mount on the return trip near to Alhallows.

Fabulously flat conditions, plenty of very 'stock' looking boats competing, like Avenger 16's, Marshans, etc, more 'Towers of Power' than you can poke a stick at, and a bit of crumpet to boot!

Enjoy.

PS. If you aint got Broadband, I wouldn't even bother clicking on the link!

Fast Cats & Phantoms Part 1

Fast Cats & Phantoms part 2

martin davis has some footage of motivation in this race(not sure of the year) taken from a helicopter going across the channel

Anyway, excellent vids, well worth watching.

Dunno how fast my home broadband is, but it's NTL's midrance package and I could watch em streaming without needing to download first.

And you'd need a fkkn shed load to get a 1.8 litre tower of power from 150, to 800 G-G's

Only just caught up with this thread and found those guy's just awesome. We aren't doing races like that anymore and that's a pity 'cause the racers like 'em. Would love to say that was when men where men but won't!!
Didn't I catch a glimpse of a very young Peter Bloomfield? He used to race Stapely cats as well and did several Putney-Calais-Putney races. A very tough competitor. Great video JF. Good camera shots from the race boats when you think that we only had cine in those days.

Fantastic film - it was a tough sport back in those days!

Always would like to have done the event - only had one go and that was in '82. Had a bad start and got upto 3rd - then hit the Estuary on a choppy day and started taking in water. Eventually had to turn back!

Totally different to anything else - speeding down the Thames is a real blast.
