Germansaleen's p600 restoration thread

or
how to save an old racer with some history

it started all in the late eighties at the Duesseldorf Boot fair,i grabed this phantom brochure ,since then i had it in my shelf .Year after year was gone and every couple of years i had the brochure in my hands and was dreaming about a phantom with a hot outboard engine.

Now its 2009 and the dream come true............

i found an older ex ski race boat with lots of history from here early years.
the project is,
let here shine again like at the first race !!

first get all the hardware off to give here a wash to get the gel preped for wet sanding.

now it is sanding time ,no electric sander !! just by hand and with good daylight to get a good result .
all the dull spots and small scratches had to go ,just so that there is enough gel to power buff and polish.it was hard to see and to know where i had to stop to go not thru the whole gel and right on to the fiberglass.

i did start with 1200 grit 3m wet paper next 2000 grit,on the bad spots with lots of oxidation from the rusty hardware i did use 600 grit wet paper.

then buff with an elektric buffer
1. with 3M Marine Imperial Compound and Finishing Material with a hard foam pad for compound
2. with 3M™ Marine Finesse-It™ II Finishing Material with a medium foam pad to get the fine swirls of
3. and last with 3M™ Ultra Performance Paste Wax ,let it dry and polish with an ultra soft foam pad

the pads are as important as the compound, wrong pads and you buff and buff and no material is gone.

i got all compounds at ebay co uk and ebay germany
a catalog is online in pdf for download here http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3...s/AAD-Catalog/

cover all hardware and decals with tape

the gel will look like new after the work !!

after lots of elbow grease the result is very good compared to the dull time in all the years of racing

Quote:
from Bradley ...Yes, have checked it was an Exe boat called streets ahead (as we used to be sponsored by Fulfords!!).

It was always a very dull looking boat but was mechanically sound back then
not anymore

It looks amazing

I'm really into car detailing, and I'd be happy with that shine on modern paint, let alone 20 year old + gelcoat

got all the hardware back from my polisher, all the corners i had to dremel with a small polishing pad by my self to get it perfect as i like it.

the hex head stainless bolts i had to be polished ,finaly the look was rounded up with some anodized red caps.

The DCD racing stainless steel tabs are looking great now

Thank's Paul E

it was lots of wed sanding hours, around 50 hours or so.Buffing time wasn't so bad.
my wife and neighbors were kidding me all the time .... How Stupid can it be to polish a boat for 4 Weeks.

They don't understand the love to a nice and sleek looking beauty !!!

Thank's Dan

the rams came with the boat and had a teleflex sticker on one, they are out of order and just fill the gap right now.

i had the same question because i wanted 2 new actuators ,on the world wide web was nothing about them to find ,only the bennet's.

now i go with the Lenco actuators the pair go's for around 250 pounds and no mess with hydraulic pump, hose and fluid.
Available in different lengths and set up.

found some time last month to get back to the restoration project of the P600

the old original upholstery from 1986 had to go , in some parts the Vinyl was hard as a Cookie and brittle.i wanted still the original look with the old seat molds and not with the bernico style molds to keep here as close to original and in the design of the eightys, but only with a nice little more colorful touch of the two thousands and not the eighties.

was a payne in the ass to cut all the 7.5x13.5 vinyl square black and white checkered piece and the yellow 5.5 wide stripes ,took me almost 3 days to cut all vinyl .
my upholstery man did all the sewing and he told me he wants not do this shit again .

but the result is a nice piece of shit now !!

Thanks

i had to change the Plywood on the backsides as well, the old ply was very soft and i did use 9mm for the back and 12mm for the front seat all in Multiplex phenolic resin coated plywood, that will last for the next 30 years .
the foam was very good for 26 years of age and i could use them all.
Steve Baker or his upholstery man must have use a good high quality foam.

The side Panel where build out of 3 layer of 3mm plywood glued together with ponal water resistant glue to get the curved shape from the side molds, after the use of clamping tools what i had found in the shop, the result was real good and after drying it stays in the exact the curved shape of the sides.
i did build them a little taller and longer to get them closer to the dashboard .
it gives you a good feeling if you are surrounded by lots of cushion !!
