Turbine RR/BP

There is quite a long thread on this on Boatmad after Beefur MM spotted her somewhere in Hampshire. Cognoscenti on the forum will no doubt post you to the right place. This was a failed JV between RR and BP when both were in the public sector. Apparently the turbine ran out of control at one point and exploded and the boat never really performed at all even in the short periods when it was running. If you want to start a Coke canning facility there is probably a very large amount ali.

That was on Flee bay about 4 years ago, it was on my wish list if I won the lottery.

Hears a link to a chap that quite often has Gnome engines for sale, usually 3-5k. That a hell of a lot of power for the money.

http://www.everettaero.com/

Then go to engines and then Rolls Royce Gnome

The Gnome engines are up to around 1250 shaft horse power and around 142Kg inc gearbox. Fuel wise they are a relatively high compression so not too juicy. Would happily run on heating oil so half the price of marine diesel.

Recon you could buy that boat, get it up and running for around 15k inc engine and box

Yes, well... If you want to be a proper anorak, ya gotta keep at it - or should that be.. keep (as in: stay) a tit?

I was doing my work emails and couldn't resist a small peek at boatmad... Anyway, I do loads of (unpaid!) overtime in my job... man's entitled to a spot of light relief (God, that sounds really dubious!!)

Think I'll go now ("I'll get me coat / anorak")

Nothing wrong with being a proper anorak, but tit, well, that`s a bit strong.

Diatribe as posted nearly 2 yrs ago,but this time in pdf,so hopefully more readable.

That PDF made interesting reading, sounds a bit of a disaster. OK so may be not a good idear putting it back in the water. What a shame though to see it probably ending being weighed in for scrap.

I am sure that picture is taken in the 'backyard' of the sadly now defunct Basildon Motor Boat museum, I remember her from when I was there last year. The boat sounds a nightmare!

Does seem a shame to turn the boat into coke cans...

Should we be trying to save these "evolutionary dead-ends"? ..We can perhaps learn just as much from what doesn't work, as from boats that do. I think they call it "trial and error"...

Mind you, pretty expensive error...
