Creating a class is a peice of p*ss, and the RYA will happily get involved if they think they can sell a few licences and a measurement certificate, the difficult bit is finding the competitors!
If your serious about it, you need to speak to an engine manufacturer, and be prepared to build a fleet of boats before you try to find customers/competitors, much like we did with the Honda series.
In the latest issue of World of Powerboats, there is an article on circuit racing in Korea, it's a bit like greyhound racing, using hydroplanes. It revolves around betting, loads of heats and a final. It started off small, but the sums of money involved and amount of spectators are now huge.
It has been talked about for this country, and I'm told a motor manufacturer has shown an interest, but they need to find a suitable hull.

Err yeh...
It's all down to money in the end. I'm probably sticking my neck on the block but I'd say the current crop of "one design" racing is all about sponsorship and tv rights. If you can get enough people interested, then there's quite a bit of money to be made!

Whenever I've seen the Honda footage, the commentry goes something like:
".........and theres boat H2 "Brill Cream", Driven by Joe Bloggs ex Renault Clio Racing series Champion & Navigated by "Kate Smith" Former "Loaded" babe of the year and now supervisor of customer relations at Rollersteel trailers UK Ltd........This boat, like its counterparts is a cougar designed & built state of the art carbon-kevlar whotsit hull with the new 2000&blah Honda Vtec turbocharged badboy outboard thats dirstributed worldwide courtesy of Eddie Stobarts who'm use Firestone tyres and Shells all-new low sulphur diesel..............
then we get adverts, when we come back
the fckers crashed out!!...........then cheeky a bit of Suzy Perry for a quick w4nk or Tiff reading off a cue card!
now thats what i call motorsport!

What sort of 'hidden' costs are involved for (example) an OCR race / season.
A mate of mine has been running an XR3i in a one make championship this year.
By the time he'd got a racing licence, done the medical, joined the club etc. etc. he'd spent around £1,000 before he even turned up for his first race.
Over the season he spent £140 per entry (x12)
4 new tyres every 4 races @ £70 a throw
Fuel costs, transport costs, spares etc. etc.
My point is.....a competetive car, ready to go, can be had for about £1200. Which would seriously interest me. But then I get priced out of the game by large entry fees, silly 'hidden' costs all for (at best) a 20 minute race.
Is it the same with boats.?
