Surfury

Some rare photos of Surfury that I have managed to obtain. We must do more to help to save her - she is currently locked in an aircraft hanger and there are no plans to restore her to public exhibition!

I know that COPOC are doing all they can but the NMM are resisting any help to restore her. Anybody got any good ideas before she is lost forever - any chance of getting Hugo at MB&Y interested in a campaign?

Ownership of Surfury

Surfury was left to the British Nation by Charles Gardener in 1984. She is therefore in the tenure of the National Maritime Museum and curated by Simon Stevens who is based in Greenwich. The boat is now in store and can only be accessed by private appointment

Surfury

As I think has been posted before, Sadly, the NMM do not see restoration of Surfury as, in their eyes, either desireable or nessesary.
They think that their responsibility is purely to ensure the safety of the boat, in a secure store. They will say that they are doing just that.
COPOC was formed with one of its aims being to ensure the restoration of Surfury.
Sadly, at present, the club is unable to carry out this function.
Our one matter for a degree of satisfaction is that Surfury is at least held in a secure location, which will hopefully, ensure much further deterioration.
I think that the NMM's view is that they have more pressing restorations, & no doubt, there is a degree of sailing boat predjudice involved ?

Surfury again..

As Martin says, this has been covered in other threads on the same subject...

http://boatmad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16879

With the latest correspondence between Mike James and NMM here:

http://boatmad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18878

I don't think that the Museum are averse to loaning Surfury for display (as she was displayed for years at Basildon) - it's just that there are, at present, no suitable secure, adequately funded or large enough premises to do so...

They would probably consider restoration (under their supervision or by the museum itself) if someone else were prepared to pay for it - provided they thought this worthwhile and if there were enough public interest to justify it.

Like it or not (and perhaps they don't like it either, these days..) they are the sole custodians of this vessel and it was left to the nation under their care and responsibility. They (I presume) are unable to authorise any proposal that takes Surfury out of their control and away from their direct supervision.

So when one of us wins the Euromillions, please can we have:

a) A dedicated building for a museum somewhere along the South Coast (an old hangar or ramshackle collection of boatsheds would be ideal..)
b) An endowment fund to secure its long-term future
c) Volunteers to help run it
d) Vastly overpaid know-it-all to supervise the whole shebang...

I'd like to be the first to put myself forward for d)

I know it... I'll be a c) !!

Surfury Article

Chris
I have been in touch with Classic Boat re an article about the club and this years rally, they are aware of Surfury's predicament and I am hoping they will do a new article about her and her future (they did one many years back apparently) if so this could be the chance to kick start re interest in her..

Surfury Article

Hi Mike
Thanks ... actually it was myself who wrote the article that was published a few years back in Classic Boat. This was the fore runner to the Surfury website www.surfury.co.uk I have still got the original documents etc. The problem with Classic Boat is its admitted preference for Sail, nothing wrong with that, as thats their selected audience.

I do believe we need some strong publicity and that MBY is probably the major publication and faces the power ownership and industry. The problem has been their reluctance to engage on classics and now offshore racing, maybe we can try and convince Hugo to pay more attention to the heritage of the modern power craft and maybe head a campaign to save Surfury?

There is major difference between the USA and UK in recognition of the past and ongoing interest - just look at the Cigarette, Donzi tradition and the esteem Don Aronow is still held over here in the USA for his contribution to the sport.

I believe it is that the UK have never had a focal point and no industry backing for preservation, COPOC is making a difference but we need support and some serious stake holding from the industry that was spawned in the 1960's by these amazing and innovative power boats. A company with the facilities and wealth such as Sunseeker would be an obvious choice for renovation and may be more acceptable to the NMM than an Italian offer?

Since the closure of Basildon the situation has declined as there is now no centre for display the classic craft in the UK. Cowes is and always will be the logical location but I don't believe there has been any recent news on the East Cowes re-development since the economy turned sour.

Any suggestions from anybody out there to support Surfury and COPOC?
