Question 12v Actuator to open/close a tap

Good afternoon gents,
I need to convert This manual valve into an electrically operated one.
I have been advised that the electric solenoid valves simular to this are restrictive so im going to try to adapt the manual one.

Does anybody know of a small 12v actuator which would be able to open the valve when given a 12v +ve feed then close when feed is removed, the feed will be live above 3000 rpm and dead below so on a good run the actuator musnt over heat.
I had thought about adapting a 'door popper' actuator but I think that would overheat if left live for more then a few minutes!

any ideas?

Well an actuator would require voltage to move in each direction, it wouldn't snap shut like a solenoid. I'm sure there would be a solenoid valve out there capable of taking the flow, it'd probably be a much more reliable route. If one the same size is restrictive, go up a size.

If you wanted to go down the actuator road you'd need to rig it with relays so that your simple voltage on/off can be converted to whatever inputs the actuator requires. As for a solenoid doing the job, aside from the issue of it overheating if left on, I doubt it'd have the poke/stroke to turn the tap and the little spring that returns it to the closed position definately won't.

Maybe Peter Unwin would know of something? There's a lot of solenoid valves in hydraulics...

Hope that helps in some way?

James

What is it you'r trying to do?

Is it to restrict water flow in the block at lower rpm?
