140 horsepower Evinrude V4 outboard

Can anyone help me with this problem on this engine as im considering buying this boat if engine problem is not terminal. It had only been used a couple of times last season and had been fully winterised at the end of the year. I serviced the boat before my first outing with new spark plugs, new lower unit oil and gave the carbs a full strip down and cleanup, (the waterpump had been changed by the previous owner and not had much use since). On the first outing the engine ran very smoothly with no hickups, I have since used the boat a further six times with no real problems until the final trip when, after about two hours use, the engine developed a running problem. The engine ran fine at trolling speeds but would stall just before reaching planing speeds. I ruled out low fuel, oil or any blockages and we limped back to the harbour.

I've made several attempts to get to the bottom of the problem but with no luck so far, I compression tested all cylinders with good results, most of the advice from various internet sites and forums point to a fuel delivery issue.

I hope someone can help.

Forgot to say that the engine was made in 1987.

Water in the fuel?
Ignition issue?
Timing shouldn't have altered itself.

I had a similar prob on my 140 and it ran fine on the bench and at tickover, The problem was found in one of the power packs breaking down .

Again thanks for all your ideas, can anyone tell me how easy it would be to get a set of coils or a powerpack as i know getting spare parts sometimes can be very hard.

i had an 140 evinrude v4
be sure it is not a fuel problem
try too push the key when the problem occurs
it will spray fuel in the engine if it revs up
you have a bad fuel pump or a blockage in the fuel delivery
do you have the black plastic VRO pump on this engine ?

DO you need the "butterfly/new" style pack or the old one? I think 87 is the year they changed from the old to new style.

Just look at the serial number on your powerpack.
