2.5 mercury offshore bullet gear box

haveto start the engine in gear, ifi try and start it in neut then select a gear it just stalls. it was used for ski racing and think possibly the gear ratio is set higher than usual. is it possible to change the gear ratio or even change the gear box itself, and what would be the best way of doing this, thanks.

does it start easily in gear or do you need to give it some throttle? I'd guess your idle is too low - do you have a tacho? Too low and it'll stall, too high and it'll damage the gearbox when shifting

It may actually be better off starting it in gear tbh.
