315Hp Yanmar Diesel Engine

All
Considering purchacing a smart boat re engined with 2 of these and Bravo Drives C/W Waterspray`s?? S/S props etc.
I know Bus Pass has played with these motors, Any nasties to report.
Servicing appears to have been by the book and 450 hours logged to date 100 in the last year.
A bit worried that current drive train replacement on like for like is close to £60k
The vessel may be a Windy under 40 ft in length. Top speed, light tanks is 41 Knotts.

Thanks

I am away for a few days to sunny, wet, windy Anglsey so apologise for slow reply in advance.
Regards
Rodders

I've done some work on these engines a while ago now...from memory I think they're Toyota, possibly LandCruiser motors. They came in for piston rings and valves but the damage was due to installation not the engineering. The engine bay was poorly ventilated and they also appeared to running on water as the valves were corroded.

I see you have a Hunton 23...now there is a 37XRS over here for sale with 315s, just saying + if you'd like to come over to pick it up you could give me the 23...no right fair enough

I have read about problems with the bravo drives not being quite up to the job but this is really not my area. I'm sure someone else on here will know more.

Keep smilin

Bravo's

We ran a 40ft wooden tender with twin 240 Yanmars on Bravo 2's. The engines, although different to the 315's, were spot on but the drives were constantly apart on the bench.
According to Mercruiser they need servicing every 50 hrs or 12 months which ever comes first. We'd do over 50 hrs every time the owner was on board the yacht!!
If you need any spares for the drives give me a cal as I have 3 in the workshop.

I have à diesel powered 32 Hustler whit 2 320hp mercruiser diesels and put bravo xr behind them due to the tq specialy on low rpm She dus 72 mph and wheight 7400 lbs .
I Will have at least use THE x drive but prefer xr specialy on heavier and big boats .

THE yanmar 315 are indeed based on toyota landrcruiser engine wich is à very relaible and strong engine saw many whit more then 500000 Miles on them in te jeeps

I have a pair of the slightly lower rated 300hp versions in my Sunseeker and Bravo 3 drives. Never had a problem with them. There were issues reported with the B3 legs not being up to the job. Mercruiser now offer a more heavy duty part as an upgrade....though I forget the bit that actually failed in mine.

Clutch cone rings a bell...not sure.

Symptoms are fwd/reverse don't engage easily...

Had mine replaced, now no problems.

Thanks All

All,
I have heard that the engines are light, strong, reliable and good performers.
Yanmar 6LPA-STZP2 315 hp @ 3800 RPM and 700Nm @ 2200 RPM .
mated to M/C Bravo 1 drives with cooling showers,
Q, Does the addition of the cooling showers mean that these are uprated units or is this feature std.
Thanks again for all your helpfull comments and the Hunton 23 is NOT for sale,
Its in rude good health for a 1981 boat, cosmetics need a tidy but it go`s and handles superbly.
Regards

I don't think drive showers are standard...in fact I didn't think that Mercruiser built showers...so they might be aftermarket?

The issue with Yanmars and the B3 drives was that some B3 overheated....hence having showers installed aftermarket. You can tell if they overheat as they'll have white residue on the drives where the saltwater has evaporated leaving the salt (so I have been told).

If they are okay now then I would assume they'll be okay forever...wouldn't worry.

I don't know if the B1 drives are more effective than the B3 I have to take the torque.

315 / Bravo 1

We are running a 30' rib with 315 coupled to Barvo 1.

I didnt set the boat up, but was told by previous owner that the Bravo 1 was chosen because it can handle the torque better than the 3. There was a real spate of 3's failing with the 315 in RIBs in particular.

The combo we have seams to work well and has covered 500 hrs without fault.

Oh, we only have one though :-(

Smile Thanks again gents

Looks like I might be lucky this time with the right combo of components.
Plan to oil sample all fluids to be sure (wear in components and water ingress).
The boat might be worth the long trip south to view after all.

All bravo drives use the same uppers and can be changed exept the XR uses other gears ,the bravo 1 handles the torque only better because there s only one prop on the water the bravo 3 has the duo props so have more grip which stress the gears more .especialy when you jump and get back in the water the duo prop will destroy the upper whit the diesel tq !

I think the use the bravo 1 on your boat because the bravo 3 will loss speed arround 55-60mph .
