454 Magnum to 496 Stroker

After a failed engine rebuild I am considering re building with a 496 stroker kit and wonder if anyone has done this or has any advice.

My 454 Magnum block needs a re bore, crank needs a grind and I need 8 new pistons, the kit is basically a whole new rotating assembly. I don't at this stage know which kit to buy or where as there are lots of different ones available, I want to keep all the internals forged as per original.

My motor is the early 454 carb with 365Hp in my Extreme 24 which currently has a nice aft cabin!

All and any comments welcomed..................

Eagle are good. Lots to consider first. Will need current performance data. Worth doing with the right bits, 500 plus easy with about 30% extra torque.
Can do the whole package. In Essex. Over 40 years experience on engines, 2 stroke / 4 stroke, liquid & tarmac, Petrol, Alcohol, Nitromethane, Blown or N/A.
Great upgrade, will make your ride "really interesting, bum clenching" .

Captain Chaos

By the Thames, watching all the "turds" go out with the "tide", then watch a "load more", come back in with the "tide" !
It's not the tools you have ! it's just knowing how to use them ! & if you ain't got them, it's knowing how to tell the person who has them what you want !
Post a query heading for what you are looking for, if I can help I may well reply !

I would also be interested in a complete engine, a 496HO would be ideal

425 hp

One of the real mysteries about Mercruiser Big Block Engines is that you can get a 485 HP 454 but they start at 300 HP ! it just depends on the combination. The 496 is rated at 375 or 425, for my money I would have the 454/485 bullet cos I can claim the smaller cube disadvantage. Now it all depends on what you have "now", head port size, Injected or carb, how good is the fuel supplied at the pontoon. It's not just slapping all the bling on, it's where you require it to work.
Really good engines take hours to build & even more hours to spec the combination that will work. If you want 850 HP, can do that but they need rebuilding every 4 hours & 113 avgas, not really practical !
I would stay with your original concept as you will really notice the upgrade in capacity. Some of the surrounding parts may have to go, your distributor is definite. The carb & inlet may be adequate, along with the risers, as may well the valve train do the job. I need to know what the original engine was spec'd at. 300 to 485 ?
No I do not have a 496 for sale.
