'Alternative propulsion'

Might be a silly question, but I was chatting with an RNLI dude at Excel about things safety-related and he was showing me the RIB they use with it's two 75hp outboards. They have (as you know) completely separate fuel and electrical systems so that if one goes down he has an 'alternative means of propulsion'

What's the best thing for us types with 1 big engine to use? Carry a spare 4hp clamp-on job? 'SeaStart'? Tow bridle and a 'Pan Pan' on VHF? Oars? Lucky rabbit's foot?

Obviously prevention being better than cure I would guess the best thing will be to make sure the engine's well looked after and to carry tools and basic spares like plugs, spare bit of HT lead, fuel hose and bulb and a few connectors/ties/clamps, etc.

What do people on here rely on?

That's quite cute Rob, only trouble is I've already got a thing to make my Cappucino frothy.

If I were to go the 'Auxiliary outboard' route (doubtful, but just curious) what sort of power would you need for an 18 foot Ring to be able to potter it back to base in average seas? 4hp? 6? More?

Just picked up some bargain bits from Ebay for it - pair of lovely little dome-shaped stainless nav lights - Tres Chic! A whole bunch of useful Merc 200 spares for next to nothing, and a Plastimo Offshore 75 bracket mount compass (I'll have to special-order the card to be marked ARSE and ELBOW )

Out of interest - I see a lot of small boats with port and stbd lights but not that many wih stern lights. where would you put the white stern light on an outboard powered boat if you had one? Yeah, I know - the stern.
On a stick like a ribber? Top of the cowl? On a hat which you wear in conditions of low visibility..?
