dude u need to check for play in your mid section and steering. grab hold of your leg and push from side to side, how much does it move?
JBD is right about different props, my only experience with a chopper (JBD's) is that you have to really fight it and break the chine

Given that you have tried two differnt props already I think part of it might be related to weight dustribution. Ian the guy on the front page was telling me about perfect weight distrubution in a Phantom @ Allhallows maybe he can offer some wisdom into the bargain?
Also you got no prop spary with that prop not sure that thats normal?

How much play is there in your steering ram silversurfer. Its not uncommon to have about 2 mm of play at the ram in a seastar system.

A little we tightened it up before @ allhallows before the race. There was still a little play but its never been a problem with control of the boat

Two props isnt many is it. I could put my chopper on my boat and it would a real handfull, then take it off and fit my old laser 2 and it would still be a right handfull and chinewalk all over the shop. Thats two props, but with my second laser 2 its great and doesn't chine walk.

Taz (and all of you).
this isnt my opinion as i've never driven a phantom fast. I recall from my convestaion with SB when i 1st enquired about an 18 that he didnmt really reccomend setback. Secondly people that know far more about phantoms than me all share the general concencus you cant beat filling the bow tank and then play with giving the boat small amounts of increased bow trim.
the other thing that seems to crop-up quite regularly, is that you actually have to work quite hard to drive a small boat very fast...its no picnic. its a definate skill....and one needs to learn and practise it.
of course......i'm just repeating what advice i think sounds fair from other peeps. I know shit-all meself!

Yes captain you are right in saying some people are more experienced then others but how can 2 boats the same, one chine walk and the other doesnt there must be a rigging problem

Chaos you hit the nail right on the head there dude, i dont just plant my foot and hold on, unless its mirror flat it takes ages to build up the speed constantly fighting with the steering and on and off the throttle its taken me a year and around 40 outings in my P20 to get to this stage and i still have a very long way to go.

Ian also said dont bother with setback and power lifts on phantoms. I think if you take the scream and fly approach then you can have a p20 that runs in the high 70's or low 80's on a mill pond but that isnt really what they where designed for they are an offshore boat rather than a river racer.
I dont have a bow tank for water but i do have a 22 gallon fuel tank in the front and an 18 gallon one in the back. The boat handles differently with the front tank empty but not radically differently to the point the boats control becomes of concern. Both Phantoms and in fact all the boats we have ever owned have had engines bolted straight to the transome raised up off the stern to the point where ample trim will give a good prop spray and the boats have run stable in all conditions.
My only fear if hitting a big wake on full trim!

easy way to prove JBD right dude. put silversurfers prop on your boat and try it.

No, I was lucky I got it off ebay put it on the boat and the handleing was transformed. It's a small hub 22 worked up to a 22.5 with I think some thinning and cupping.
Chaos is right, mine still wobbles a bit at speed but its nothing that you can't control/correct with a bit of steering input. its not just a case of holding the wheel straight and planting your foot on the floor. However before with the old prop it was a real fight and got so bad that you wouldnt dare to see if you could drive through it as if you were wrong the boat would have rolled.
